Tom Brady Copes With Son Not Being Into Sports: 'It Was Hard for Me'

Tom Brady

The New England Patriots quarterback had a hard time coming to terms with his boy not liking all the things he likes.

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, who's been with the team for 19 years, shared in an interview in Men's Health that he struggled to understand the fact that his second son is "different" and not into the same things he is -- namely sports.

Brady relayed that his first son Jack, 12 (with his ex Bridget Moynihan), is like him not only because he's into sports but because he "holds a lot in." Meanwhile, his 9-year-old son, Benny (with wife Gisele Bundchen), "lets it all out" and doesn't care about sports, something he's come to terms with.

"Jack loves sports. He wants to try hard, and he never wants to disappoint his dad. That was me," Brady said. "I'd wake up early on weekends to do stuff with my dad. That's why I didn't party a lot. If Dad wanted to golf, I wanted to be there with him. And if I ever missed those things, it would crush me."

"When Benny came along, I thought he would be just like Jack. So I was like, 'C'mon, let's do this.' And he was like, 'Nope.' And I was like, 'What? No, do this!'" Brady said.

It was Bundchen who pressed her husband to accept his son.

"Would you effing understand that your son is different?" she would say to him, according to Brady.

"I was like, 'What do you mean? He's a boy. He should just do all these things that I do,'" Brady said, expressing his narrow understanding of gender roles.

The multiple Super Bowl winner eventually came to terms with the fact that his children are not mirror images of him (he also has a 7-year-old daughter, Vivian).

"It was hard for me," he said.

"The reality is that Benny just likes different things. And it's great because now I just have to go do what he wants to do. When we do that, we have the best time," Brady said. "He's like, 'OMG, Dad, you're so funny.' He loves joking, and I joke back."
