Escort Revealed in Rekers Scandal

GIO ROMAN RENT BOY 2 X390 (MYSPACE) | ADVOCATE.COM

He’s been photographed accompanying Family Research Council cofounder George Alan Rekers in his travels, and Rekers admits to hiring the undergraduate-age, blond escort for a European trip but denies engaging in "inappropriate behavior."

“Lucien,” the young man at the center of an emerging scandal involving one of the most influential leaders of the "ex-gay" movement, identifies himself as Jo-vanni Roman on his Facebook and MySpace profiles, The Advocate has learned.

Reached Wednesday by phone, a man purporting to be Roman repeatedly declined to discuss any details of being hired by Rekers for a recent 10-day trip to Madrid and London. “I don’t think people realize how serious this has gotten, and I would have talked about this had my privacy been respected,” Roman said, referring to his Rentboy.com profile, which was posted Tuesday by Unzipped, followed by several gay blogs.

“There’s absolutely nothing else I can say,” Roman added.

According to Facebook and MySpace profiles created by Roman, he is a 20-year-old Miami resident and a 2008 graduate of Felix Varela High School in The Hammocks, an unincorporated suburb located 20 miles west of Miami.

In a Wednesday statement on his website, Rekers referred to Roman — known on his Rentboy profile as “Geo” and as “Mark” on a profile on Men4RentNow.com — as his “travel assistant” who was hired “to lift his luggage in his travels because of an ongoing condition following surgery.”

“A recent article in an alternative newspaper cleverly gave false impressions of inappropriate behavior because of its misleading innuendo, incorrectly implying that Professor George Rekers used the Rentboy website to hire a prostitute to accompany him on a recent trip,” the statement read. “Dr. Rekers found his recent travel assistant by interviewing acquaintances, and only found out about his travel assistant’s alleged prostitution activity and Internet advertisements during the trip. There was nothing inappropriate with this relationship. Professor Rekers was not involved in any illegal or sexual behavior with his travel assistant."

The Miami New Times broke the story in a Tuesday article, referring to the escort using the pseudonym “Lucien.” The story was quickly followed in the LGBT media and mainstream outlets, including CBS News and The Washington Post.

Despite his statement, Rekers intimated in a Tuesday message via Facebook to Joe.My.God blogger Joe Jervis that he had hired the escort as part of his ongoing Christian ministry. Rekers said he shared “scientific information on the desirability of abandoning homosexual intercourse” with the young man whom he had hired.

“Like Jesus Christ, I deliberately spend time with sinners with the loving goal to try to help them,” Rekers wrote.

In the New Times article Roman did not disclose details of the trip but described Rekers as a man who “honestly cares about taking care of kids."

Rekers is a cofounder of the Family Research Council, along with Focus on the Family founder James Dobson. He is a board member of the National Association for Research and Therapy of Homosexuality, a group promoting “ex-gay” reparative therapy, which is widely condemned by health organizations, including the American Medical Association and the American Psychological Association. Rekers is also a member of the American College of Pediatricians, which had submitted a friend-of-the-court brief opposing marriage equality in the federal challenge to Proposition 8, Perry v. Schwarzenegger.

In 2008, Rekers served as a paid expert witness in a lawsuit in which he defended Florida’s ban on adoption by gay people. According to Equality Florida, Rekers and a colleague were paid $87,000 for their testimony.

Rekers replied to a request for comment with his previous statement via e-mail.

Dr. Rekers is threatening to sue this young man for violating a confidentiality agreement. He is in need of legal representation, and given the favor he has done us all by exposing Rekers for the fraud and hypocrite that he is, it is absolutely appropriate for the LGBT community to support him in his legal defense. Yes, he was involved in sex work -- to pay his college tuition. Unless we buy into the same false morality as Rekers and his ilk, we should stand behind Roman, not turn our noses up at him.

Although Rekers is or should have been, the real subject and focus of this article, the Advocates duty is to report and print the facts, and Jo-vanni Roman (aka ***) is a fact in this story, and since he himself has advertised himself in the public domain, he has made the matter of his privacy void. So, the Advocate is free to use these facts. Sadly, the story is more gossip than news and is better suite for a scandal rag.

Why does a reader suggest that Lambda Legal or the ACLU get involved? Lambda takes cases of national significance that further the cause of lgbt civil rights or AIDS issues. The ACLU gets involved when civil liberties are jeopardized. This may be a public scandal, but I don't recall reading anything about a lawsuit or any lgbt legal right or civil liberty being violated. For readers who speak about that which they have little or no knowledge, a male escort, many of whom are hired for companionship, massage, or masturbation, may engage in whatever level of sexual activity that he prefers, usually decided on in advance. Intercourse is often not the primary reason an escort is hired. Most use a pseudonym for privacy because they want to avoid stigmatization. Alas, far too many Advocate readers have exposed their hostility toward and ignorance of the porn industry. Arrogance, superiority, judgmentalism and ignorance are far less appealing traits than youth and naivete.

I have been a fan of Advocate for almost a decade and I always appreciate this magazine as a magazine that is fighting for the gay right. As much as I understand your way of journalism, the story about George Reker has really disappointed me and people around me. I think it's not appropriate to expose the real name and the pictures of the escort. The whole story should focus on George Reker not this young man who is working as an escort just to get by and go to school. Have you ever thought about the consequences that him and his family will receive from your irresponsible act? What would he do now after everything has settled? Just to use this young gay man as a tool to seek the revenge on this hypocrite is not fair for the escort. You have so many ways to hide his identity but you chose not to.   I am extremely disappointed with your judgment and all the good works that you have done. To bring down one big hypocrite you are bringing down another young gay man who has become a victim of your journalism.

a couple of troubling points for the Advocate and readers.... 1) For the Advocate: Does the advocate maintain it has a legal right to research, eg by picture matching, and reveal in its publication (online or paper) the personal info of any young man working as an escort and who is using a stage-name in that work?? And what is the legal definition of slander? 2) Isn't it a bit strange there are pix of this guy Rekers pushing his own luggage at Miami Airport?? And equally strange, emails between Rekers and Lucien printed in the media? Where did that stuff come from?? Some little birdy in the sky?? This story is starting to smell. On all sides. :( Sadly. Let the frenzy continue.

BOOOOO! i don't think it was proper for advocate to post this young guy's personal information, EVEN IF the guy is an escort. so F..n what@@! did you guys ever hear the phrase 'stage name'??? this is turning into a media frenzy. frenzy or not: that does not make your actions right. i don't blame this guy one bit for wanting to keep his mouth shut. indeed, in the same spirit as this frenzy, i'd advise him to hire a good PR agent... and go for the highest bidder! what goes around comes aound! advocate, get your checkbook out. as for Dr Rekers, that's another issue. he can lift his own baggage, of which he has enough!

I guess Rekers couldn't find a companion at his church or anti-gay rallies to accompany him on his trip! So he finds Lucien on Rentboy! What's the problem? LOL!

This kid wasn't "OUTED" by anyone but himself when HE advertised on myspace and other sites... Since he splashed his face & info all over the web before this event, how can he really think people should be leaving him alone. I guess now he is finding out there are consequences for his actions. Everyone needs to think BEFORE they do things, even 20 yr olds. I do hope no harm comes to him because of the media frenzy but hope if he wanted to be under the radar he would never had posted he was for rent... As for the Dr... the truth will always come out eventually!!!

I think the Advocate is getting what it deserves for revealing this guy's identity. It appears that the New Miami Times has chosen to protect his identity and so he is talking with them and giving them the story (which they deserve since they broke it). Given the timing I'm wondering if "outing" the guy was some kind of trick to try to force the guy to talk with the Advocate and/or punish the guy for not speaking to them. Whatever the rationale, it really was uncalled for and inappropriate for the Advocate to take this approach. Hopefully, the powers that be will reconsider their approaches in future scenarios (and we all know there likely will be more like this one).
