“The President has spoken out in opposition to Proposition 8 because it is divisive and discriminatory. He will continue to promote equality for LGBT Americans.”

Just like the rest of the human population becomes more educated and experiences the "changing on mind" phase in life...the President fits into this population as well. He can change his mind about the issue if he wants...may not have been all about it at first, but being President, he has dived deeper into the issue and now knows how he truly feels. Really tired of people complaining about our Commander and Chief... votes were there, he is President, live with it...if you don't like it and you're under the age of 49, saying he was born first, get a passport and leave the country. If you're over 49...deal with it, you're old enough to know that there are 2 major political parties that run for office every 4 years and they both have a 50/50 chance of winning... adjust.

Does this mean Obama has come around, and changed his views on equal marriage for all?? I'll believe it when I hear it (yes, I'm skeptical). I voted for the man, and will do so again. Because I believe in him? No, because he's the lesser of the two or three evils.

This is pure politics! Obama is trying to 'make-nice' by saying a few supporting words for same-sex marriage equality. He seems to forget he has stated his OPPOSITION to S-S marriage from the outset. His repeated support for 'traditional' marriage makes his present pronouncement sound completely disengenuous! He wants our votes for Democrats in November; that's ALL!

And what do i think about the White House statement regarding Prop 8? "Just words....just words..." In fact Obama has been quite clear that he does NOT support equality for lesbians and gays. He stated unequivocably during his campaign and at the Saddleback Church forum with Rick Warren, that he was not in favor of gay marriage, and that he firmly believes that marriage should be between a man and a woman. He clearly sited his so-called "religious" views as his reasoning. So in effect, Obama does not encourage equality for us. So let's not make up fake stuff about what this man has done for gays and lesbians, because in fact and truth, he has not been there for us. The White House should revise the statement to say what it really means...no marriage for you.

The only way equal marriage will be possible across the USA is by changing society's mindset. Once the societal shift starts to pick up in Middle America, we'll be closer. But do not expect it to happen without hard work. Talk to your friends and family. Ask the opposition what they would do if their child was gay and wanted to be married... and don't do in a condescending tone. We need to revolutionize thought. Then we can pressure government.

When did he speak out about this and why does his continued support of LGBT folk not include full marriage equality?!?

If we had a Republican President I'm sure he'd be giving us 'girlfriend' smooches on the cheek and advancing our rights in society. Obama isn't perfect but he sure as Hell is better than any Republican. Folks please think before you throw the gay baby out with the bathwater.

He campaigned with HOPE, it is past time to DO. I voted for him, and sadly it is unlikely that a better candidate will be available in 2012. I can only hope that 2016 provides real promise. Idle talk from politicians has become the norm on rights issues, so I would prefer they remain silent and we can focus on listening to the courts. Since they will not remain completely silent, it would be better for everyone if media outlets simply quit printing their empty press releases.
