HRC Drops Target

The Human Rights Campaign will drop both Target Corp. and Best Buy, two companies embattled over donations that aided an antigay politician's campaign, from its annual Buying for Equality Guide.

In a Friday statement, HRC vice president of communications Fred Sainz said the national organization "will not encourage people to shop at either store and believes that consumers should make their own decisions after careful consideration of all of the information available to them.

"Because we understand the impact of leaving Target and Best Buy on the various products associated with the buyer’s guide, both companies will soon be removed from it," Sainz added.

The decision comes after mounting criticism of the HRC Corporate Equality Index (from which the buyer's guide is derived) and whether it accurately reflects a company's record on LGBT equality.

Speaking on Michelangelo Signorile's satellite radio show Thursday, Sainz said HRC would remain neutral in a MoveOn.org-organized boycott of Target. But HRC announced last week that it would donate $150,000 to "help elect a pro-equality governor and legislature in Minnesota" after Target declined a request from the group to do so. "We believe that it is impossible to avoid turning any further actions into a political issue and will use the benefit of time to make thoughtful, careful decisions on how best to move forward," Target spokeswoman Jessica Carlson said.

Sainz told Signorile that HRC is grappling with a sea change in the realm of corporate political donations, resulting from the January U.S. Supreme Court decision in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, which struck down limits on corporate spending in elections.

"Already complicated, the Citizens United decision has made campaign finance issues even more complex," Sainz said in the statement. "HRC is thoughtfully studying the many ramifications of political giving by companies in this new reality."

The court's decision allowed for an influx in campaign spending, and Target, which donated $150,000 to an organization supporting Minnesota state representative Tom Emmer's campaign for governor, has become a cautionary tale in corporate America. The retailer's pro-LGBT reputation has quickly eroded in recent weeks, fueled by boycotts, viral protest videos, and demonstrations at Target locations around the nation.

Emmer, who won the Republican gubernatorial primary election earlier this month, has consistently opposed marriage rights for same-sex couples and authored a 2007 state constitutional amendment prohibiting gay marriage.

The HRC Corporate Equality Index has primarily focused on how a company treats its gay employees — using criteria such as partner benefits, diversity training, and nondiscrimination policies — but the latest report evaluates whether an employer "exhibits responsible behavior towards the LGBT community" and "does not engage in action that would undermine LGBT equality."

Both Target and Best Buy received 100% ratings on HRC's 2010 index, completed before the controversial donations were made. HRC has delayed the release of its 2011 Corporate Equality Index as it considers the methodology used to compile the report.

Target executives did not address the growing backlash in its second-quarter earnings call Wednesday. Though the company reported a 14.3% increase in net income compared to the year-ago period, it's yet to be seen what impact the fallout resulting from Target's political donations will have on future earnings. News of the donation broke just days before the end of the company's second quarter on July 31.

"HRC didn't promote a boycott on Target giving money for prop 8" Again you libs need to stop bullshitting: "In response to inaccurate claims that Target made donations in support of Proposition 8, Target has issued the following statement: Target did not, nor has the company ever, knowingly donated to legislation or referendums that aim to undermine equality for all, including Proposition 8 in California. Further, Target’s support of the GLBT community is unwavering, and inclusiveness remains a core value of our company." (Target.come press room) How many more times do we need to go through this?

HRC when are you going to do something about the real enemies Wal Mart...and the other retailers that score way lower and give money to antii gay groups and causes?? Huh ?? OR did WalMart pay you off?? I will still shop at both Target and Best Buy as I feel this whole campaign has been misguided and a waste of time, considering there are far worse companies that seem to get away with their anti gay activities because the HRC is too busy attacking Target a friend of the community.

@ Linty, I just thought that the term he used was quite interesting and funny. But I have to disagree because I don't think he even knew what he was talking about. I was trying to rephrase it so that he can see how stupid he really sounds (much like all this boycott shenanigans) and STILL you have not been able to prove that Target warrants such a boycott, its all assumptions, not facts. BTW I was at Target again and bought some really good stuff. Next to the jewelry section there was this isle full of accessories and I laughed when I say all the rainbow gear (belts, purses, wallets, bracelets). Talked to the gay manager again this time a little bit longer, he said that his partner got laid off a few months ago, just around the same time he got promoted to his current position (general manager) but he is relieved that they don't have to worry about medical insurance since he took advantage of Target's DP benefits. His partner is going to apply at Target. Great for them!

Sad thing is that as a gay man, I can care less what HRC does or says. I am an adult and can make my own decisions. I often disagree with what HRC does (or doesn't do), They are a group of political activist who have an agenda all their own, Keep sucking in money and do nothing with it. After donating to them for years, I did some soul searching and read what they do and decided I can spend my money elsewhere. Why should we boycott Target or remove them for the because of one donation. There is no way we will like everything a person does or believes in in congress. Sometimes we need to take the ugly with the good. I am voting for Charlie Crist in Florida, he opposed gay marriage but he do so many other thing good for the state. My choice is a democrat intent on giving my hard earned money away to everyone or a republican who wants to take all my rights away. That is what I am sure Target is considering, while there is some ugly wiht this guy there must be some good they see.

I didn't even know there was such an organization as HRC. Who gives a flip that they have done what they did. And exactly what does that really accomplish? Boycott all you want, no one cares. Target can donate to whatever cause they see fit and if some of you people don't like it then just fuck off. Go shop at whatever store you wish. And as for this so called boycott, here's a reality check-the local tv station in town when to the Target store to ask people if they would be supporting the boycott. Well they couldn't find anyone who even knew what it was. No one was out there picketing, not one time since this so called boycott started. The world does not revolve around you gays and does not need your permission before it makes any political decision. I have never really given money before but you can bet I will start giving money to whomever I chose. I am sick of you people trying to shove your lifestyle down our throats. Pun most definitely intended

I will still shop at Best Buy for electronics. My only alternative is either Wal Mart or Radio Shack, and WM is often overpriced on some selections and has less options, and Radio Shack is always overpriced, at to that the fact that WM and RS have even worse LGBT records on equality and it's a no brainer. Not to mention the fact that HRC knows as much about fighting for equality as I know about turbine engines.
