Antigay School Official May Keep Job

MCCANCE DEPT OF EDUCATION X390 | ADVOCATE.COM

After Arkansas school board member Clint McCance advocated on Facebook for the suicide of gay people, the Arkansas Department of Education condemned his comments, but said it may be impossible for him to be removed from office.

“In Arkansas law, the only way to recall a school board member is over a felony [committed by him or her] or absentee issues,” said Julie Johnson Thompson, the director of communications for the Arkansas Department of Education in Little Rock.

Thompson says McCance, as an elected official, answers to voters, not Midland school district’s superintendent. “[The Arkansas Department of Education] doesn’t have any control over his job,” Thompson pointed out.

But Thompson made it clear her office condemns McCance’s Facebook comments, in which he called gay people “fags” and “queers,” and encouraged them to kill themselves if they didn’t get AIDS and die first.

On Wednesday, Thompson’s office released the following statement: “The Arkansas Department of Education strongly condemns remarks or attitudes of this kind and are dismayed to see that a school board official would post something of this insensitive nature on a public forum like Facebook. Because Mr. McCance is an elected official, the department has no means of dealing with him directly. However, the department does have staff who investigate matters of bullying in schools and we will monitor and quickly respond to any bullying of students that may occur because of this, as we have with other civil rights issues in the past. The department also has worked with the State’s Office of the Attorney General during the month of October to provide training to counselors across the state regarding cyberbullying, ‘sexting’ and texting, which included a portion on how to watch for and deal with bullying of this kind.”

Midland school district officials have so far remained silent on the issue. No one with the school district has released a statement or spoken to the press since The Advocatebroke the story on the postings Tuesday.

“I believe the school district is working on a statement,” Thompson said. “I know their superintendent is not in town right now.”

Thompson says her office has been inundated with e-mails, though mostly from out of state: “People are pretty much horrified,” she said.

The guy is truly an idiot, he should lose his job and have to work for the gay community where there he may learn some compassion and respect!

I can't believe how insensitive and crass this idiot is, Clint McCance will get just what's coming to him!. It doesn't matter if a person is heterosexual, gay, bisexual, they still are human beings [unlike this excuse for a human being] and should be respected and be shown compassion. I truly hope that somebody he showed no respect for helps the scum bag get what's coming to him, ultimately one of his hooker lady friends will have their John guy give him what he truly deserves.

Looking on in disgust, I like to laugh at the US as much anybody, but sometimes I am just so disgusted that I can't even motivate myself to feel superior. It is a disgrace to think that this man will be allowed to keep his position. The wording of this statement from Thompson's office is also quite disturbing, they appear sorry that he got caught rather than sorry that a person with such extreme and hateful views is allowed to have any influence over their children.

How can a horrifying comment like that not be "blown out of proportion"?! This individual needs to be immediately removed from office. If he feels this way about homosexual individuals, what's his true stance on immigrants, ethnic diversity, religious diversity, free thinking? I wouldn't want him to have enough time in his position to share his comments on any other issue. His blatant ignorance and hatred for other human beings clearly displays his severe lack of leadership ability and should be removed by Arkansas citizens.

@Chris - As a bisexual man, I don't want him silenced or unemployed. I just want him removed from a position of influence over vulnerable children. I don't care if he hates african children, jewish children, homosexual children, ugly children, red headed children, or children born in August - he's welcome do his hatred - but the impact of that kind of hatred on vulnerable children is utterly intolerable and shouldn't be allowed to continue. As for criticizing children for being too weak to endure bigotry and hate - I'd encourage you to read Alan Down's 'The Velvet Rage' - because while you may not have experienced the typical extent of suffering that many young homosexual men experience - I assure you that for many and perhaps even most young homosexual men - the level of suffering is orders of magnitude what any child should be be expected to tolerate.

mccance is completely entitled to his opinion and it's just fine if he wants to vent his opinions on his facebook page. however, what is unacceptable is that this hateful man is in a position to create and enforce school board policy that affects not only glbt students but also the mindset of the school community at large. as far as his concerns about his family, he should be more concerned about the example he's setting for his children. as far as espousing good christian values, whatever happened to "love thy neighbor" and "judge not"?

I didn't list Canada as my hometown in error. I chose not to list my actual hometown but still show that I was in Canada which is why I entered that there. I'm glad that you agree with my post but it's terrible that you should. Perhaps if more americans felt like you did they could band together and fix the problem, sadly that isn't likely to happen until the teabaggers do irreparable damage.

This comment is directed to: Looking on in disgust... I completely agree with your comment; and that's pretty bad considering i live in this country, but i think it's kinda funny that you are implying that we are stupid and you put Canada as your home town.lol (you set yourself up for it). But anyways, that McCance guy is the most ignorant out of all the cult-esque Christians. I'm not going to say anymore. This has all become one big cliche (don't get me wrong though, this guy is the scum of the U.S."

It's no wonder the U.S.A. is a laughing-stock to the rest of the civilized world at the moment, you've let corporations and christian religious extremists hijack your government, your healthcare and your education and now look at the mess you're in. You have someone on the board of education spewing hate and sounding like an uneducated hillbilly while doing it, and the Teabaggers will have almost total control after your upcoming election. Good job citizens, good job.
