In the Galleries: Samantha Thomas

Pardon the stars in our eyes. Ellen Page is the roaring-hot actress and activist of the moment. Her girlfriend is Samantha Thomas, a talented artist having her third solo show. Luckily we live in Los Angeles, where feeling like part of the moment is only a gallery trip away.

The work in the show, "Complex Systems of Communication,"  is restrained and raw with a pulled-back palette, often employing the original colors and textures of the humble material she works with. If art can be defined as something beautifully done, Thomas’s folded shapes and abstract fabric pieces succeed. She has a mastery over her materials, and the layered, stitched pieces have a energetic and spontaneous feeling to them, like mid-century action paintings.
