An Indiana town has postponed a decision on an LGBT rights measure, with city officials saying too many people were still "confused" and "misinformed" about a proposed amendment adding sexual orientation and gender identity to the city's existing civil rights ordinance.
The Goshen City Council was to vote on the amendment tonight, but Mayor Allan Kaufffman sent out a statement Monday night saying the council will instead hold a "'town hall' type discussion" at which citizens will have a chance to provide input on the measure, Elkhart TV station WSJV reports.
Although the city is erring on the side of caution, plenty of townspeople are showing support for LGBT equal protections. Dozens of supporters, many of them from faith communities, gathered at a recent rally, reports TV station WSBT.
