A transgender supermodel has launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund a feature-length documentary.

Andreja Pejic, who recently came out as trans in an interview with Entertainment Tonight, is raising funds for a documentary titled Andrej(a). Going from a Serbian refugee camp to the catwalk of famed designer Jean Paul Gaultier, the 22-year-old model has led an extraordinary life, and she hopes her story will "help build a bridge between my community and the rest of the world."

"I ask you, fellow Kickstarters, to join and help me complete the film," Pejic wrote on the Kickstarter page. "I hope that by sharing my humanity, pain, tears, laughter, joy, and biggest struggles on film, it will shed light on what it means to live as a transgender individual."

At the time of this article's posting, the project had raised nearly $20,000 of a $200,000 goal, which will be used to fund the filming of Pejic as she and a camera crew take a journey back to her homeland. The amount will also cover post-production, music, and legal fees.

The Bosnian-born Pejic entered the public consciousness in 2011 when she appeared modeling both men's and women's wear in Gaultier fashion shows, becoming one of the world's most versatile and visible androgynous models.

Since then, she's appeared on the covers of Elle's Siberian edition and New York magazine, among a number of other publications, and was featured in David Bowie's "The Stars Are Out Tonight" music video alongside Tilda Swinton. Earlier this year, Pejic was cast in Sofia Coppola's upcoming live-action film adaptation of The Little Mermaid. She is also a past 40 Under 40 honoree of The Advocate.
