HBO has released a new trailer for La Leyenda Negra.

The film, which premiered at this year's Sundance festival and later screened at Outfest, is a moving coming-of-age story that follows Aleteia (Monica Betancourt) as she transfers to a new high school in Compton, Calif.

Aleteia, a Latinx teenager, is about to become undocumented. Her struggle to stay in America combines with her transition to a new school and her potential love interest in a popular classmate, Rosarito (Kailei Lopez).

Penned and directed by Patricia Vidal Delgado, La Leyenda Negra cast Compton High School students in several roles. Additionally, Delgado said the film's message of immigrant rights could not be timelier.

"We feel that the release of the film is especially timely since, this past September, the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit reversed a lower court ruling that had blocked the administration from phasing out Temporary Protected Status, known as TPS, for immigrants from El Salvador, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Sudan," Delgado said in a statement. "Taking into account October's developments in the U.S. Supreme Court, immigrant rights have never been so imperiled in recent memory."

The film premieres Friday night on HBO Latino and can also be streamed on HBO Max. Watch the trailer below.
