Lauren Boebert calls reporting on alleged same-sex relationships ‘filthy garbage’

Republican Rep. Lauren Boebert denied having same-sex relationships and castigated the media covering an ethics complaint alleging she had relationships with staffers in a video she posted to social media on Sunday.

“I hate to spoil the fan fiction, but y’all need to do better,” she said in a video posted on X.

But the Colorado congresswoman only vaguely addressed allegations from the sworn ethics complaint, filed by David Wheeler of American Muckrakers and first reported by the Colorado Times Recorder.

Wheeler, who runs the American Muckrakers political action committee, alleged Boebert had sexual relations with two women, former district director Clarice Navarro and current chief of staff Raven Finegan, and one man, former Chief of Staff Jeffrey Small. The complaint also says Navarro was paid a $200,000 settlement after informing the congresswoman she intended to file her own complaint with the House Committee on Ethics.

Boebert, though, stressed Wheeler has made dubious claims about her in the past, including when the super PAC published a photo of a different woman in a bed and falsely identifying her as Boebert, as reported by CNN in 2022.

“You are all aware that this is coming from the same desperate hack CNN caught in 2022 publishing a photo of another woman as me, and also failing to prove a host of other lies that he's created about me. You ran this story anyway,” Boebert said in her video.

“This is more filthy garbage that reaches beyond me. This reaches into the homes of people who have dedicated years of service to Coloradans alongside of me. I know that you're more than willing to attack me and shame my household, but this is different, and you crossed a line. I hope you think about the impact that this could have on them and their families.”

Boebert also spent a significant amount of time in the video discussing the House Ethics Committee’s processes. She stressed the committee cannot formally accept a complaint within 60 days of an election, and she is up for re-election in Colorado’s 4th Congressional District in November.

She did crack a joke at the end of the video. “I gotta say just one more thing before I sign off here to the rest of y’all,” she said. “No, I’m not hiring.”

The social media video never directly addresses the allegations of relationships, and many online noted Boebert in the past has denied social media rumors until video emerged. Most infamously, she was ejected in 2023 from a family-friendly stage production of Beetlejuice: The Musical, and only when video emerged of her fondling a male companion’s genitals did the “family values” conservative acknowledge she “simply fell short of my values.”

Boebert also spoke to allegations more directly with Sources Say founder Juliegrace Brufke after the initial report and took particular issue with allegations of same-sex relationships.

“Well, I’m not a lesbian or bisexual, and I have never, ever been in any inappropriate relationship, nor have I ever been sexually involved with any staff,” she said.

Brufke also asked about allegations Boebert had engaged in a threesome that included former Rep. Matt Gaetz, who himself was the subject of an extensive House Ethics Committee investigation released after his resignation. “Creative, I’ll give him that!” she said.
