Gay activists in
Illinois are fighting back against Republican
gubernatorial candidate and local dairy magnate Jim
Oberweis, who has said he wants to repeal the
state's pro-gay Human Rights Act. He has also called
for an amendment to the state constitution banning
same-sex marriage, and he gave campaign money to the antigay
Illinois Family Institute.
Now, a local gay rights group is considering a
boycott of Oberweis Dairy products. "If he's going to
give money to groups that oppose same-sex marriages,
why should we give money to him?" asked a spokesman for
the Oak Park Area Lesbian and Gay Association.
Other gay rights groups have already attacked
Oberweis for his positions. At an event last week,
Equality Illinois spokesman Rick Garcia said, "Why
isn't he milking a different cow, because Illinois
doesn't take well to hate-mongering and
discrimination." He encouraged a boycott of Oberweis Dairy.
A Chicago Tribune poll shows Oberweis
trailing GOP front-runner Judy Baar Topinka by a
two-to-one margin. (Sirius OutQ News)
