The sponsors of a proposed ballot initiative to ban same-sex marriage in California say that Republican presidential nominee John McCain has given them his support, reports the Associated Press. ProtectMarriage.com told the AP that its campaign received an e-mail from McCain in which he stated his support of their cause and applauded their efforts to "recognize marriage as a unique institution between a man and a woman." The Associated Press reported that in 2006, McCain supported an unsuccessful ballot measure to ban gay marriage and deny domestic partners spousal rights in his home state of Arizona. McCain has opposed the Federal Marriage Amendment in the past, saying the matter of marriage should be left up to the states. (The Advocate)
