An assistant to former Malaysian finance minister Anwar Ibrahim on Sunday accused Ibrahim of sodomy; it is the second time such an allegation has been made.

The former finance minister was first accused of being gay in 1998 by then-prime minister Mahathir bin Mohamad and fired from the cabinet. Ibrahim was then tried, convicted, and sentenced to 15 years for sodomy and corruption. He was released in September 2004 after the conviction was overturned.

After 22 years as prime minister, Mohamad retired in 2003. In 2006 he said that he would not allow Ibrahim to become prime minister because he is gay. (The Advocate)
