A legal complaint from residents of the Greek island Lesbos that gay women are monopolizing the term "lesbian" was rejected in court Tuesday, Agence France-Presse reports. According to the Athens court, the term "lesbian" does not refer to personality or social status and therefore cannot be offensive to the islanders.

AFP reported that the original complaint had been filed in April by three residents of the island, the former home of poet Sappho, who expressed love for other women in her sixth century work. (The Advocate)
