Salt Lake City welcomed its first openly gay council member on Tuesday, when Stan Penfold was elected to the district 3 seat representing the Avenues and Capitol Hill.
Penfold, director of the Utah AIDS Foundation, advances the gains made by openly LGBT legislators in the state's capital city, according to The Salt Lake Tribune.
"The win gives Salt Lake City its first openly gay council member," the Tribune reported. "In recent years, Utah's progressive capital also has elected three openly gay state legislators."
In winning, Penfold edged out Phil Carroll, a more conservative candidate favored by the Mormon community.
