Washington, D.C.,'s lax handling of AIDS programs could cost the city millions in funding from the Department of Housing and Urban Development.
The Washington Post reports that HUD has threatened to withhold $12 million in future housing funding related to HIV/AIDS issues because "city oversight of the programs has fallen short since 2003, and ... the city failed to provide financial records to HUD in some cases." The federal agency has requested a housing program audit and documents from D.C. since June but heard nothing.
Now D.C. city council member David Catania is furious and is pulling city health department director Pierre Vigilance and AIDS administration director Shannon Hader into meetings to make sure the housing issues are addressed and HUD is placated. The health officials are scheduled to meet with Catania on Wednesday.
"I hope to have an exhaustive list of every HUD concern, and we will go over them item by item," Catania told the Post.
