Former Houston city attorney Gene Locke, the chief opponent of out lesbian mayoral contender Annise Parker in a December 12 runoff election, refused to say Monday whether he would accept the endorsement of a local antigay activist.
Locke was endorsed in a mailer sent on the eve of early voting by the Conservative Republicans of Harris County, which identified the endorsements of antigay activist Steven Hotze, according to the Houston Chronicle.
"Locke, who met with Hotze and sought his support prior to the Nov. 3 city election, said he was refraining from 'divisive campaigning' and asked his supporters to follow his lead," the Chronicle reported.
Locke said, "I am not going to go into issues of race, issues of sexuality."
Gay groups such as Houston's GLBT Political Caucus are questioning why Locke, who supports many of their positions, did not strongly repudiate the endorsement by Lotze.
