A man has confessed to murdering a theater director in Los Angeles who was eventually revealed to be his lover. Jose Fructoso, a 25-year-old Mexican national, was arrested Tuesday and is being held in lieu of $1 million bail, according to KABC News.

Bennett Bradley, 59, was found dead on January 2 with multiple stab wounds in his apartment in east Hollywood at 6 p.m. Bradley and Fructoso live about a block apart.

Police captain Matt Blake told KCBS that Bradley was likely killed at 5 p.m. on Friday.

Detectives initially believed that Bradley was the target of a robbery, but they later learned of the relationship. Fructoso was linked to the murder by evidence left in the apartment, which has yet to be disclosed. He was arrested when surveillance crews found him near Bradley's apartment. Police did not state a motive for the murder.

Bradley was a director at the Fountain Theater for 16 years and was preparing for his next production, The Ballad of Emmett Till. According to his bio on the theater's website, Bradley received a 2006 Ovation Award and an award from the NAACP for directing Joe Turner's Come and Gone.
