As Iowa state legislators return to session this week, Democratic leaders are pledging to silence discussion of any potential constitutional amendment to overturn the supreme court's unanimous decision last April to legalize same-sex marriage.
According to WHO TV in Des Moines, senate majority leader Mike Gronstal and house speaker Pat Murphy have promised to block discussions of any such amendment, preferring to concentrate their members' work on the budget.
"We have to keep Iowa equal, and I'm going to do everything in my power to make sure that happens," said Gronstal.
However, Republicans such as Rep. Kevin Koester insist that Iowans deserve a say through a vote on a constitutional amendment. WHO TV reports that Koester may attempt to circulate a petition among colleagues to bolster the effort.
