Kate McGarrigle, the beloved Canadian folksinger-songwriter and mother of gay musician Rufus Wainwright, passed away Monday after a long battle with cancer.

The 63-year-old artist was fighting clear cell sarcoma when she died at her home in Montreal. McGarrigle found success with her sister, fellow singer Anna McGarrigle, in the 1970s -- The New York Times named her and her sister's debut record as one of the best of 1976.

McGarrigle was the mother of both Rufus Wainwright and his sister, Martha, who is a successful singer in her own right. Both Wainwright children are products of McGarrigle's former marriage to Loudon Wainwright III, a singer-songwriter and actor.
