While most of Fred Phelps's family is in lockstep with his rabidly antigay doctrine, his son Nate has strayed far from the Westboro Church.
Nate Phelps spoke to the Canadian news program The Standard about his Topeka, Kan.-based family and their motivations. He describes them as attention-seekers who believe if they live by the Bible's messages, they can better their chances at going to heaven.
The younger Phelps described growing up among 12 siblings, saying his father physically abused the children as well as their mother. He also said his father may be mentally ill.
