Senate Confirms Judge Hit by Smears

The Senate confirmed judge Marisa Demeo to a seat on the D.C. superior court Tuesday night. Her nomination had been help up for over a year by Sen. Jim DeMint of South Carolina, and she was the target of a conservative group's smear letter that called her "dangerous to our nation" because she is an out lesbian.

According to GayPolitics.com, which reports via On Top Magazine, the Traditional Values Coalition sent senators a letter that urged them to reject Demeo because of a "radical lesbian" agenda.

"As an open, radical lesbian, Demeo has openly condemned the effort to amend our Constitution to protect marriage as a one-man, one-woman union," the coalition wrote in the letter obtained by the website ThinkProgress.org. "Demeo supports gay marriage, claiming it is a constitutional right. She also claims that LGBT individuals are equal to racial minorities and can claim protection as minorities under our civil rights laws."

Demeo was confirmed in a 66-32 vote that largely fell according to party lines, reports On Top Magazine. She has been a D.C. magistrate judge since 2007.
