Florida Governor Charlie Crist is expected to announce that he will run on the independent ticket in his race for the U.S. Senate seat this fall.
The Orlando Sentinel reports that Crist will make the announcement on Thursday in his hometown of St. Petersburg. Crist's move is to emphasize that he is above politics, and would rather "serve the people."
Crist was one of several politicians covered in director Kirby Dick's documentary Outrage, which reported on closeted politicians with antigay voting records. Crist has publicly opposed marriage equality and adoption by gay couples.
Crist will likely face GOP front-runner Marco Rubio, and Democratic nominee, U.S. Representative Kendrick Meek.
