A former child soldier and Sudanese refugee who twice raped an Australian woman has been sentenced to four years in jail, reports the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. A lawyer for Condoc Mario Ring claimed that he had consensual sex with the 45-year-old woman, but she told the court she is a lesbian and not had sex with a man for 22 years.
Mario Ring, 27, was convicted of raping the woman twice at her home in Hobart in July. Tasmania justice Shan Tennant noted that the rape has led the victim to attempt suicide. Tennant acknowledged that Mario Ring has had a difficult life, being forced into becoming a soldier in Sudan at age 10 and escaping as a United Nations refugee, but she said that does not excuse his crimes. He will be up for parole in two and a half years.
