Police have ruled out hate as a motive in the weekend murder of Clinton "Billy" Lewis, a gay bar owner in Elmira, N.Y.
According to WENY-TV, Louis Duffy, a short-term acquaintance of Lewis, 53, confessed to the early Sunday morning shooting that killed Lewis, who lived on North Main Street across the street from his bar, Club Chill. It is unclear how the two men knew each other.
The Associated Press reports that Duffy, 20, might have done handiwork for Lewis at the bar. Duffy was charged with second-degree murder and is due to be arraigned Tuesday.
In addition to owning the bar, Lewis was active in local pride celebrations. His business partner says the bar will remain open.
