Christine Quinn's bid to become mayor of New York City -- and the first openly gay person to win the job -- got a boost this weekend from a story in her hometown newspaper.

The New York Times reports that Mayor Michael Bloomberg is quietly endorsing Quinn as his potential successor, who takes office when his third term ends in two years. Although Quinn said she had not sought the endorsement and Bloomberg denies having given one, the Times insists the support is "the worst-kept secret in City Hall." Bloomberg, an independent and billionaire, reportedly isn't shy about telling colleagues that Quinn is his favorite.

Most candidates have not even officially declared that they're running. But Quinn is already leading in polls against potential competitors. And she is outraising her competition in fund-raising. With nearly double the amount of her nearest challenger, the council speaker brought in $1.32 million during the most recent disclosure period.

The Times notes that Bloomberg was also endorsed by his predecessor -- Rudy Giuliani. Support from a popular incumbent can go a long way with voters. But Bloomberg isn't exactly at the height of his popularity, with a recent poll showing his job approval, at 45%, is the lowest in six years.

The best news yet for Quinn's candidacy might have been the unfortunate scandal that led to Anthony Weiner's resignation from Congress after he was caught sending naked pictures to women online. Until then, Weiner had outwardly expressed interest in running and was the leader in polls.

None of this should imply winning would be easy. Quinn might lead all other challengers in a poll, but twice as many people were undecided as expressed support for her.
