Andrew Printer's photo series "Sleepers" meditates on the many reasons — sleep, sensuality, seclusion — for being in bed. Read more below.

There is an ambiguity in Andrew Printer's photos of men in bed. Perhaps sexual display isn't the foremost reason we see these sculptural bodies curled into themselves.

"Influenced by a chaste pin-up of Marilyn Monroe, 'Sleepers' is a series of photographs of men waiting for the world to change," Printer says. "As I've grown older I have felt increasingly domesticated, to such an extent that I am often alienated from my former identity as a gay man with a clearly-delineated sexual persona. Here, a bed is still part of each man's environment but it's less about the sex and more about the sheets. As with all my work, I aim to include all kinds of bodies, each one a Sleeping Beauty, only hairier."

Limited edition prints are available for sale.

Born in Hong Kong and raised there, in Texas, and in rural England, Andrew Printer is a British artist who has been living and working in Southern California since 1991. Now based in Indianapolis, he most recently lived and worked in Key West, where he established Key West Contemporary Art.

Printer's work is currently included in the "Round Hole Square Peg" Trevor Project Art Benefit. Juried from hundreds of photos submitted from nine countries, this show is one of the largest queer group photography exhibitions ever staged.

Andrew -- who continues to shoot great event photos for Advocate.com -- can be found on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook.
