Watch the First Ad From a Trans Candidate in Virginia

Roem

Danica Roem made history by becoming the first out trans person to win a legislative primary in the state; now she's closer than ever to winning a seat in Virginia's legislature.

Flush with donations, Virginia House of Delegates candidate Danica Roem launched her first ad this week.

The commercial highlights Roem's nine-year work as a reporter for the Gainesville Times, where she helped expose details on an unpopular power plant project. Roem says she wants to bring "a reporter's eye to Richmond." Watch the ad below.

The ads, part of a six-figure media buy, will run in northern Virginia until the election on November 7. Should Roem prevail over anti-LGBT incumbent Bob Marshall -- who introduced a "bathroom bill" in the state legislature -- she'd be the nation's only out transgender legislator.
