You may have heard that football player Michael Sam got engaged to Vito Cammisano while on vacation in Italy. But the couple announced on social media Friday that Sam got down on one knee at St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City.

The former St. Louis Rams and Dallas Cowboys defensive end, the first openly gay NFL player drafted and now a free agent, celebrated this 25th birthday in Italy with Cammisano.

The Vatican is the home base for Pope Francis, who has generally been more accepting of LGBT Catholics, but recently said, "Family is threatened by growing efforts on the part of some to redefine the very institution of marriage, by relativism, by the culture of the ephemeral, by a lack of openness to life." The Vatican later confirmed the pope's comments were indeed related to same-sex marriage.
