Queen Margaret

What happens when you drop foulmouthed comedian Margaret Cho in Peachtree City, Ga.? Suffice it to say Focus on the Family had better watch out.

Margaret Cho is on location in Georgia, which she says is a bit queer. Known for her hysterically irreverent routines -- often featuring her struggle with body image -- in her new TV series she plays girl friday to Jane (Brooke Elliott), a plus-size lawyer who has the brains but lacks the confidence to succeed in her competitive firm. In the first episode Jane dies and her body is inhabited by the soul of a vapid aspiring model. Cho's character, Teri, is responsible for guiding Jane through the discovery of her new life.

In real life Cho is constantly rediscovering herself, including a new foray into music (her band is called Fag and Hag). She discusses her homophobic gym war and why she should be Miss California.

Advocate.com:How is Peachtree City, Ga., treating you?
Margaret Cho: Well, I'm a little disturbed. I have to go to the gym; I have to live here in the city. And it's a nice little town, and everybody's really nice. But at the gym I'm having a big fight, an invisible fight, with people. You know Focus on the Family, the James Dobson organization? They're really hideous. They have all the magazines out on the rack at the gym, and I think this is really disturbing. Every time I go to the gym I bring a bunch of other magazines and stack them so nobody can see them. The problem is now, every time I come back, they're all separated again. So now I go to the gym and I wear anti-Prop. 8 propaganda T-shirts or have girls making out on my shirts. So that's my own way of fighting it. That's a small problem -- well, it's a huge problem, but it's an interesting cultural situation to be out here; it's different.

I went to Atlanta on business once. A coworker and I checked out some gay bars. To get into one, we had to "join" a "club" (fill out paperwork no doubt logged and tracked by city police). The lesbian bar we visited was bombed exactly one week later. It all felt pretty homophobic to me.

I would say to Joesph Lynch - when you live in a world, where gays and lesbians don't have equal rights, you should be happy that Cho is working for your rights.

40% of Californians were born here. A bunch of Bible beaters moved here to get alcohol banned from the beaches & parks here in San Diego due to the riot a couple of years ago at the beach in MY zip code. I am not for irresponsible beer drinking college kids, but it ruined the rest of enjoying a couple of beers on the beach enjoying a sun set after a long day of work. They should ticket the parents whom let their SCREAMING KIDS run unsupervised on the beach kicking sand all over freshly oiled sunbathers. Every year here we see a lot of GA license plates & those hicks leave TONS of trash on our beaches for us to pick up after every July 4th. The Mormans built a $24 million church only contributing to themselves unlike the Catholics who give undiscriminatingly to ALL people of need. Why denominations of the same Jesus exist baffles me. My families both Gay & traditional VALUE ME as I do them. After all Gay also means Happy, so leave me alone.

Chill Joseph, I visit Georgia every year and I love Atlanta. HOWEVER, to say Georgia (and Kentucky where i'm from) is not more homophobic that CA is crazy. From the tone of your letter, you sound a tad bit bitter. I did not see Cho slam Georgia in the article. She just pointed out that there are some real nuts in the south. Which there are!

I'll agree Georgia is a bit queer ... but then some. The state ranks 7th for number of same-sex households, says the Census. And Metro Atlanta - which includes Peachtree City - has the 4th-largest concentration of gays and lesbians in the nation. It was a majority of the voters in Margaret Cho's home state of California, not Georgia, who rejected gay marriage as law after all. So why would she and the Advocate assume the everybody lives here (or anywhere outside the so-called "gay ghetto" for that matter) is a right-wing homophobe? As a gay man who lives in Peachtree City by choice - and not because I "have" to as Cho complains - I assure her there are plenty of us around, and none of my neighbors give a damn about my personal life. I also work out at the same gym she now frequents. But unlike her, I don't promote my sexuality or politics from the front of my gym shirt. As the old saying goes: "You can attract more flies with honey than vinegar."
