The Persistence of Gay Memory

HAROLD FORD MAIN X390 (FAIR USE) | ADVOCATE.COM

The question of whether or not former Tennessee congressman Harold E. Ford Jr. will challenge incumbent Kirsten Gillibrand for the Democratic nomination for U.S. senator from New York has preoccupied the latter state’s political circles for more than a month. During this time, the Democratic Party’s base, including LGBT advocates, reproductive rights groups, and unions, has opposed the Wall Street executive loudly, even by the vociferous standards of the Empire State.

“Ford has credibility problems with the left in general and with the typical Democratic voter in a New York primary,” says Kenneth Sherrill, a political scientist at Hunter College in New York City. “Certainly, the LGBT vote is a critical part of the Democratic constituency. It counts for a fairly large chunk of votes in the Democratic primary.”

No doubt attuned to that fact, Ford is preparing to address the local chapter of Stonewall Democrats, an influential LGBT political club, in Manhattan Wednesday evening, in what could be one of his last public appearances before formally announcing his political intentions. When he enters what some are playfully calling the “lion’s den,” he will be forced to reckon with his two past votes for the antigay Federal Marriage Amendment, and the lingering wounds of New Yorkers who suffered a painful marriage equality defeat in the state senate last year.

In both cases, gay activists who oppose Ford say the issue amounts to an irreparable breach of trust.

Jim Maynard, former president of the Memphis Stonewall Democrats, recalls that when Ford, then 26, first won the ninth congressional district seat vacated by his father, Harold Ford Sr., in 1996, constituents expected that he would uphold his prominent African-American family’s commitment to civil rights, including LGBT equality.

“We pretty much considered him a safe vote on gay and lesbian issues in the beginning,” says Maynard. “He was pretty liberal for Tennessee, at any rate.”

In the weeks leading up to the first marriage amendment vote in 2004, Maynard understood Ford’s position to be that of the Democratic leadership at the time: opposition to same-sex marriage, but also opposition to the discriminatory amendment, which would enshrine a gay marriage ban in the U.S. Constitution. Although he never spoke with Ford directly, he says that official responses from the congressman’s Washington, D.C., office supported this understanding.

“We were all e-mailing and calling,” says Maynard. “Within days of the vote, I received an e-mail saying that he opposed the amendment on the basis of his support for the Defense of Marriage Act. He said DOMA made the FMA unnecessary.”

Regarding Chris Lynn. This is the man who nearly destroyed Stonewall Democrats NYC as the president in 1997 when he endorsed Republican Rudy Giuliani's bid for reelection. Most of NYC's LGBT community loathed the mean spirited mayor. As state in the article Lynn also worked for and is close to State Senator Ruben Diaz Sr. He is the most vocally hateful and homophobic figure in NY State government. Lynn's support of Ford merely validates the opposition of a large majority of gay voters to Ford's candidacy. Joe Hagelmann, Stonewall NYC's new president, does not earn money off of politics. The club has been back on track and doing good work supporting pro-LGBT Democrats and working against those with a poor LGBT record Republican OR Democrat. I have good expectations for tonight's meeting.

Ford is bad enough, but I don't expect anything more from pols, who will do anything to further their own interests. What is appalling are the gay lap dogs like Lynn who will do anything, including sell gay people down the river, to be close to pols. Disgraceful. No wonder we struggle so much in the political arena. The people who head organizations like Stonewall Democrats are only interested in advancing themselves.

Hey folks! This is NY for goodness sake! The only way Harold E. Ford Jr. won't run would be because of lack of funding. He doesn't have to care about his past anti-LGBT votes because blacks will vote for him because 1) he is black; and 2) because he is anti-LGBT. The intelligencia in NYC could not stop the man who singlehandedly - well, not singlehandedly since he had the support of the gay Council leader, a Democrat - repealed the twice voted on term limits from getting reelected so NY is a wide open field for scumbags of every ilk. Look at every corrupt politician in that state, then try to figure how they all get re-elected year after year: it’s because they give back roughly 5c of each corrupt dollar to their constituents. It’s not informed voters who get their way, it’s uninformed voters who see small but continuous returns on their investment (donations) into their communities without regard for where those ROIs originate who hold sway over the ballot box.

Did I read this wrong? The "gay activist" that invited Ford to speak to the Stonewall Democrats is the former counsel to Reuben Diaz...really? Reuben Diaz, the biggest homophobe in New York State government? The same Reuben Diaz that helped orchestrate the coup in the state senate? The same Reuben Diaz that led a demonstration in NYC AGAINST gay marriage in this state? The same Resben Diaz that has been tireless in undermining the Governor who is extremely pro-gay? This "activist" wants me to give Ford Jr. a chance? Please...spare me!!! Ford does not stand a chance. He can talk to "gay leaders" all he wants and I personally hope that the "talk" is disrupted by protestors. Talk is cheap, apparently from our own "leaders" as well.

Let me start by sharing my full appreciation for Senator Gillibrand; the work and commitment she has put in on behalf of the GLBT community has not been matched by any of her peers. I would love to see her elected to the Senate. That being said, any comments that try to imply Congressman Harold Ford’s race or sex automatically make him ineligible to represent a GLBT constituency is racist and sexist. Coming from a generation that has worked hard to help change the hearts and minds of those raised in a primarily Heterosexist environment, I’m prone to want to take those who have come to a better understanding of GLBT issues at their word, with the intention of keeping them to their word. Groups like the Stonewall Democrats are not traders to their community when they invite all possible candidates to share their opinions and beliefs with the community, but rather living up to their ideals when they make sure every candidate is aware of what is important to our community and in turn informing our community about the candidates.

His votes have to have consequences. What kind of precedent would we set if were to give this guy a pass for voting to enshrine second class citizenship for gays and lesbians in the US constitution? The notion is beyond absurd. Whether his change of heart is genuine or just very convenient is irrelevant. GLBT New Yorkers already have a proactive advocate in Gillibrand.

Honestly, here in New York, I don't think it's going to be that big a thing. This no-name guy comes in with a sketchy-at-best reputation and wants to represent New York? No thank you, we have a New Yorker (born and bred) in office right now doing a splendid job even without taking GLTB issues into account. This guy doesn't have the clout necessary to wrestle that office away from her.

Like my good friends Hunter Johnston and Jim Maynard, I cannot say enough bad about Harold Ford, Jr. However, one area that was not specifically gay, was HFJ's failure to endorse the winner of the Democratic primary to replace him in Congress because either 1) the nominee was white or 2) his cousin was running as an independent in the race. I believe this was in itself traitorous to his party and possibly cost him the senate race. New Yorkers can do better than Harold Ford, Jr.

Do. Not. Trust. This. Man*. (* and by the way, Gillibrand is doing a terrific job, imo, particularly with regard to LGBT issues. It's not as if the choice between the two is a difficult one.)

What's with the LGBT community and voting for those who promise us the moon and the stars then spit in our faces after they have cashed our checks and voted against us on every piece of meaningful LGBT legislation to come up for a vote? They do not not respect us ! All they want is our $$$$, our time to volunteer for their campaigns, and our votes. Enough is Enough!
