Activists Arrested After Sit-in at Pelosi's Offices

Ten LGBT activists were arrested Thursday after 19 people staged a bi-coastal sit-in at the San Francisco and Washington, D.C., offices of House speaker Nancy Pelosi to demand that the Employment Non-Discrimination Act be brought to the House floor for a vote by the end of March.

Four of the eight activists in the D.C. office and six of the 11 in San Francisco were arrested. Members of the S.F. contingent were eventually fined $125 each and released Thursday afternoon, according to one of the protesters, Kip Williams. The D.C. protesters were charged with unlawful entry, released late Thursday evening on their own recognizance, and have a court date set for April 6, according to Paul Yandura, one of the coordinators the protest.

The activists, who were organized by GetEqual.org, went to Pelosi's offices at about 4 p.m. EST where they had previously scheduled meetings with her staff members. Once inside, they told staffers they would not leave until either the Speaker agreed to a vote or they were arrested.

“We understand that Speaker Pelosi and the rest of Congress are in the midst of passing health care reform legislation,” said a statement from Robin McGehee, an organizer of the action who was arrested at the White House earlier on Thursday protesting the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy. “However, health care for many LGBTQ families is intimately connected to employment protections and we cannot wait a minute longer for those protections. We’ve already waited far too long.”

Transgender individuals can be fired in 38 states simply for being trans and gays can be fired in 29 states simply for being gay with no legal recourse. No federal law currently provides employment protections to LGBT people.

ENDA would add those protections and many activists believed the legislation would likely pass within the first or second year of President Barack Obama’s administration. But the effort appears to have stalled, with the bill awaiting a committee vote in both the House and the Senate. In the House, 198 members have signed on to the measure and chief sponsor Rep. Barney Frank said he is still hoping for a committee vote by month’s end.

“I’m pushing for it, it may slip a little -- part of it is that health care keeps slipping,” he said.

A spokesperson for Speaker Pelosi, whose district has a sizable LGBT population, would not say whether Pelosi would meet with the activists or respond to their demands.

“The Speaker believes passing ENDA is a top priority and hopes that we can bring ENDA up as soon as possible,” said Drew Hammill. “That being said, the right time to bring the measure to the floor will be when we have the votes.

But McGehee said she was willing to risk a loss on the House floor. “Once the vote is called, we will know who our opposition and who our allies are,” McGehee told The Advocate during an interview on Wednesday. “Not until we see the vote do we really know where we need to be applying pressure.

Oh no Fed up, they'll be running against Republicans! No matter how slowly these ladies put it up for a vote, The GOP won't put it up at all. But Mickey Mouse is a phony, I saw him go in the restroom at Disneyland once when I was little and I went to get his autograph but "he" is a "she". Besides you need to keep mice away from the elephants because they're very afraid of them running up their trunks.

Pelosi, Boxer & Feinstein. What HUGE disappointments to not only the Gay Community, but to women, as well. We expected to see strong leadership out of these women, and instead, we see mealey-mouthed cowardice, shrinking violets and stuttering. Pelosi needs to go to a speech therapist to learn to speak so she doesn't sound like a mental defective. She is no leader - she let's everyone else dictate her position. She will NEVER receive another vote from me. And to the jackass who said, "Who else is running," I don't give a flying fuck. I'll vote for Mickey Fucking Mouse before I'll vote for ANY of those cunts again.

Michael, in reading through these comments, it seems you are the naive one. When Florida starts leading in a progressive nature, then you can have your 2 cents. Until then, it seems like you need to start changing some things in Florida.

This is exactly what we need more of: storm the Bastille! Not that it even got mainstream press today...but more of us need to chain ourselves, regularly, to the White House gates, to show up in offices and refuse to leave -- and that includes at the State Dept. & immigration offices demanding the right to bring in our foreign partners. No one's going to hand us our equality. We have to take it -- to force it -- that is the only way progress is made in this country. That is the American way. Less letter-writing. More sit-ins! Please support Vigil at the Monument this Sunday, March 21st, from 11 am - 6 pm. See the event's facebook page; tweet for us! http://ctae.open-board.com

Talking about delusional...someone who thinks Nancy Pelosi is a friend of the LGBT community would be a description of that, in my view. I have friends San Fran...they all say that she is a jerk who cares more about herself and politics (gee, she is a politician, so that makes since) than anything else. No one will ever mistake Ms. Pelosi for a stateswoman or a "profile in courage." Bring ENDA to the floor for a vote...if you can't multi-task at her level, then get the heck out of there and let someone else do the job!

Let's hope this is only the start of the revolution. We need to storm every office of our elected representatives (whose salaries and family benefits are paid by our tax dollars) and refuse to leave, DEMANDING our equal civil rights as guaranteed by the US Constitution NOW! That includes ENDA, the Dignity for All Students Act, the original Immigration Family Act (when gay couples were included), and the repeal of DADT and DOMA. What other minority group would stand for this? Why should anybody listen to us when we stay silent in the background? Why can't our representatives multi-task? Here's to the revolution!

Randy, I think you are being very naive. Nancy Pelosi has been a great friend of the gay community. She fought strongly against every program you mentioned. She has also promised repeal of these laws when the senate acts. As of right now, the house has passed 200 plus bills that the senate has not worked on yet. Take your anger where it belongs. If for one second you do not think Pelosi wants to repeal DADT, ENDA, et al, you are delusional. Also, you state that you will not vote for her again. Let me ask you this question, who is on the ballot in your congressional district that you would vote for that is a better friend to our community than Pelosi?
