Lt. Dan Choi released a statement to announce that he and Capt. James Pietrangelo will start a fast in opposition to the “don’t ask, don’t tell” compromise. He also said that more civil disobedience and arrests could be possible this weekend.

According to the statement from Choi, which he said was not organized on behalf of any organization, “Immediately following congressional mark-ups on the National Defense Authorization Act 2011, Captain James Pietrangelo and I will commence a fast in pursuit of Equality and Dignity. We have three demands of President Barack Obama

Demand #1: End the Comprehensive Working Group "Study," which insults the dignity of all Americans.
Demand #2: End "Don't Ask Don't Tell" discharges forever.
Demand #3: Replace all discriminatory regulations in the military with a comprehensive non-discrimination policy.”

Choi also mentioned the possibility of more nonviolent direct action that could result in arrests over the holiday weekend. He repeated the thoughts on Twitter.

“In response to the United States Senate and the House of Representatives voting on the repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, forces are mobilizing for non-violent direct action and civil disobedience,” he said. “Veterans are ready to spend Memorial Weekend in prison. Fasting will also commence. The simple demands are (1) End DADT firings. (2) Enact non-discrimination. (3) End the insulting, wasteful study.”

Dan Choi deserves our thanks and our donations (money, not food). Support the lone activists that are changing history. Dan Choi is a hero. He is risking his life for all of us. While i had hoped this hunger strike would also be a "reality show," we have to just use youtube. If you don't have the conviction to go on a hunger strike, at least consider a Hungry Strike. This is accomplished by giving up Breakfast and seeing how long you can go before lunch. Make sure everyone knows you're not having breakfast because your "starving for equality." The money you save skipping breakfast should be donated to GetEQUAL.com to cover Dan Choi's medical bills or his funeral.

Lt. Dan Choi is a hero...ANY way you look at it! He is willing to make the ultimate sacrifice for fools and the rest of us who "get it"! Many a battle has been won this way (women's right to vote etc...) We are in debt to these two men and whoever follow (God forbid it come to that)! If you care, stop judging, call your Prez., senators etc... and save some lives here!!!

I have several issues with their fast. First you set an end date for a fast. They have not established that, therefore they will starve to death. The timing of this is all wrong. You fast before the vote to bring more attention to the issue voted on. Another good time for this fast to actually have real meaning would be in December upon the completion of the military survey/review. That would be a good final push for the pres, sec of defense and the joint chiefs to remember that the legislation passed and it's up to them to ok the repeal. Ideally it should be repealed RIGHT NOW butthis issue does not live within a political vacuum I am also an activist, but I can see the forest for the trees and the bigger picture means getting more done over the long haul than just one quick shot and end up with Palin or Perry as pres. The review will not be cancelled and they will die. Sorry.

I am glad to see that I am not the only person who finds Daniel Choi and his tactics irritating. It is much like the guy who keeps heckling the President in public. These people, while well intended, are showing their complete naivety about the political process. Dan Choi needs to show his respect for all veterans this weekend and otherwise shut up.

Don't you think Jeremy is also talking about, if you read between the lines, how he is uncomfortable with his ability to handle the situation. Some would say he's uncomfortable with his own sexuality. He thinks every man wants him or that gay men aren't able to know who is game and who is not. He fears someone might find him attractive or have sexual thoughts about him. He fears it so much he over controls because he's scare about what to do. It's that fear, insecurity and ignorance that we deal with. Looking from the other side, I get hit on my women all the time, and men too, but don't freak out about it. No matter the gender there are easy ways to let someone know you're not interested. For guys like Jeremy, he still thinks gay is bad and wrong. He fears rumor, being thought of like that and chastised by their buddies. Society has generally started teaching that gay is wrong starting at a young age (a bit different now). If you're secure with who you are it doesn't matter.

Any civil disobedience is likely to help with DADT's repeal, and get the attention of the media and those who watch and/or read it. It's a courageous thing to do, and demonstrates how serious a problem DADT is. People willing to starve themselves for its repeal will surely garner some attention, especially those as well known as Choi and Petroangelo. I say good luck to both, hope more have the courage to join them, and thank you. I hope it has the intended impact and makes some inroads in the debate.

@Chris: I believe you mean "waning", and he's not doing it to be famous. He's doing it because the law is wrong and needs to be changed.

Hunger strikes are stupid, I don't care if Ghandi did it. Humans need to eat. You think Obama or Gen. Mullen give a damn whether you starve to death. For all the people that are afraid of some guy looking at your little dick in the shower, that's NOT a nat'l security issue. Jeremy, you are in the Ch(Air) Force, do the real man's work, on the ground, like the infantry does, like I did in Iraq when I was in the Marines and then you can cry about DADT. All that DADT comes down to is that straight guys are afraid of being objectified. Now you know how every woman in the world feels. I'm certain that Jeremy's theoretical war time situation fantasy of being felt up during a fire strike is probably never going to happen. Javier, if our Commander in Chief can send us to war while he sits in his office....he can handle demands.
