A "Cure" for Homosexuality?

A hormonal treatment given to pregnant mothers who are at risk of giving birth to babies with ambiguous genitalia is raising concern among some researchers and gay activists because the treatment also decreases the likelihood that the baby will grow up a lesbian, the Los Angeles Times reports.

The treatment, which is called prenatal dexamethasone therapy and is only given to a few dozen women every year, is a step toward “engineering in the womb for sexual orientation,” says Alice Dreger, an opponent of the treatment and a professor at Northwestern University.

“Most clinicians speak about this treatment as ambiguous-genitalia prevention,” Dreger says. “Others suggest that you should prevent homosexuality if you can. But being gay or lesbian is not a disease and should not be treated as such.”

In the face of criticism from Dreger and others, such as the National Center for Lesbian Rights, a consortium of medical groups will release updated guidelines for the treatment in September.  The updates are expected to describe the treatment as experimental and reiterate that the standard approach for cases of ambiguous genitalia is to perform corrective surgery.

But even that guideline change is likely to face opposition from intersex activists who oppose corrective genital surgery on newborns. As the Intersex Society of America explains on its website, "That is a crucial reason why medically unnecessary surgeries should not be done without the patient’s consent; the child with an intersex condition may later want genitals (either the ones they were born with or surgically constructed anatomy) different than what the doctors would have chosen. Surgically constructed genitals are extremely difficult if not impossible to “undo,” and children altered at birth or in infancy are largely stuck with what doctors give them."

Well for those of you who are concerned with the world becoming overpopulated, have you ever saw the movie Artificial Intelligence? In the movie you must have a license to have children, and I suppose that they would enforce the same rule if overpopulating ever became a threat. As for those of you who think that becoming heterosexual is a threat to the "gay community", you must remember that not everyone wants to be like you. Not everyone can accept being homosexual and it isn't right for you to try to force them to be heterosexual. Some will fight until their last breath! These are the ones that are good Christians, homophobes (if you wish to call them this), people who have been picked on throughout school because of this disease, and yes I will call it a disease because people diagnosed with homosexuality think differently from the normal heterosexual brain, and of course there are those that have become homosexual during their adulthood. Which they didn't ask for and want to change

Jesus. How about we just enforce a law that dictates every mother must have 3 children or more? I mean, come on. Isn't our world crowded enough as it is? Disregarding the fact that more straight people=more children being born=more children getting placed into foster homes, it would create even more of a separation between the majority and minority and in the long run cause more problems. Why don't we just make it so every baby is white? I mean, come on. It'll get rid of the problem of race vs. race, wouldn't it? [/sarcasm] Yeah, no. It's not going to help anything.

How about a drug that prevents hatred, be it against blacks, jews, gays etc. We'd put it in the water in the south, where the rabid talibanevangelical have always needed someone to hate to sell their corrupt moral values of hatred of a minority. BTW, how many people realize that the Nuremburg laws in nazi germany were modeled after our old south, where colored were considered 3/5th of a person. So it looks like the republican south is rising again. Just got a new group to hate - the gays. And don't let them fool you with love the sinner hate the sin. They aren't that dumb to not know that the hate the sin gets pinned on the sinner as hate the sinner. Little different then how they during slave days "took good care of their [n-words]s. Always a victim. Always crying they are persecuted, while they're the persecutors. Goebbels rising from the ashes of Nazi Germany . He said "if you tell lies often enough and outrageous enough, they will be seen as the truth. He was Cath. btw

For those that have commented that "Left Handedness" is not a normal characteristic, kindly be informed that not only was it the norm for some cultures, but the principal handiness for long periods. If not, why are there written scripts that go from left-to-right rather than right to left? It all comes down to whether or not the writer can see what he has written as his hand moves across the paper. Have you ever watched a left handed person right from left to right?

I don't know if this was ever covered here but, as was put forward in the BBC documentary "Making Of Me : John Barrowman", being born a gay boy increases by 30% with every other mail sibling, so if no female baby is born in between the brothers. Apparently the mother's body protects itself against an overdose of testosterone by giving herself AND the fetus an extra dosage of estrogen, thus "making" a boy gay. Personally, I think it's good ole Mother Nature protecting the world (and us) against over-crowding. Boy, if what the TV-programme claims is correct (and it's the most plausible theory I have heard so far), think of all the gay men in those extra large Christian and Muslim families!

@Don, "Your heterosexist logic isn't laughable, dude." -- What the hell are you talking about? Just to let you know homosexuality is not "the norm" just like being left handed etc... it doesn't mean that it is wrong. Its just not the "norm" as opposed to heterosexuality which is everywhere. And I'm not the one being "heterosexist," for some reason that is how mother nature decided that sexuality would be consisting of: 90% hetero, 10% homo etc,... Just be realistic, since there is so much advancement, even in the field of nano technology in which little cell like machines can fix certain things that happen in your brain (anger, Alzheimer, depression, certain other behaviors) in which certain people may not want to be gay (or straight for that matter) and so I wouldn't be surprise that such technology would exist in the future that would make sexual orientation (or even the level of intelligence) a choice. Interesting stuff I say.

"Much like how there is no drug that prevents AIDS, but there will be soon, much like how there is no drug that prevents cancer, or OCD , or left handed-ness or or even dumbness but there will be soon. There are new advances everyday. Your naiveness is quite laughable." So being Gay is like having cancer or being dumb? Your heterosexist logic isn't laughable, dude. It's pitiful. And so are you! There will be a drug to prevent homosexuality when pigs fly.

Maybe I am confused but I do not understand how this surgery is a cure for homosexuality. I do not agree with this procedure regardless of the sexual orientation implications. In a world where we are fighting to have freedom over our body and lives I think it is a giant step backwards.
