Bullying Drives Student to Suicide

Billy Lucas, a 15-year-old high school freshman from Greensburg, Ind., took his own life Thursday following a period of antigay bullying from classmates that went unaddressed.

Lucas was found dead inside his family’s barn Thursday, where he had killed himself.

According to WHTR, Greensburg High School principal Phil Chappel said that officials were unaware of bullying against Lucas, but friends said the abuse was constant, and often directed to what the aggressors presumed about his sexual orientation.

"Some people at school called him names," student Nick Hughes told WHTR, adding that most of the names questioned Lucas's sexual orientation. The young man was unable to fight back.

WHTR reports that Greensburg High School administrators have considered the formation of a committee on bullying issues in the wake of the tragedy.

actually, you can shut the hell up because the news cheated the priciple, they edited his words and made it sound bad. billy wasnt bullied, he was a bully. its high school so he wasnt alone, but his bullying was the catalyst for some choice words that were said to him, he was constantly getting in trouble in class. if you send an email you are a dumbass. this fuck has no idea what he is talking about. oh and a side note, the chairs are welded to the tables so the horseshit that says his chair was pulled from underneath him? bullshit. so if you wanna be a bully yourelf and e-mail the pricicple? HYPOCRIT! i think yes. so you can go to hell. thanks.

Billy Lucas was only 15 years old and just starting a new beginning in high school when it came to a too short of an end because of bulling. Young kids just do not realize the impact that their words and actions have on others. How many young people have to die for them to realize that bullying is not right. Student bullied him because of what they thought of his sexuality. No one has the right to say anything about how an individual feels. Every single person is different and there is absolute no reason one person should harass someone because of their sexuality. Teens these days have no consideration of what their words really mean to someone. A lot of the students called Billy names and put him down and he could not fight back. That is completely outrageous. The schools need to put more of an effort to stop these kinds of things and have more awareness of bullying around school. Maybe even have seminars about it. It makes me sick to my stomach to think that there are people out there that do not have a heart and call names and harass like they do. It makes me even more sick that especially recently bullying has been all over the web and news and what the outcomes have been, and these teens still continue to harass and bully. These victims have families and have lives just like everyone else and there is no reason what so ever that it has to end so shortly because they feel unwanted. I wish someone was there to tell him everything would be ok, and those people have insecurities just like you do and they do not want to deal with them so they want to pick on someone else. I wish someone would have noticed and was able to help. It breaks my heart to see stories like these because they are way to young to even think about dying. They have 70 years plus ahead of them!

"BULLYING: THE KILLING OF BILLY LUCAS" Billy was only 15 and was an ordinary every day high school student. He never committed a crime was a good student but had many 'enemies' even though he did nothing to them. Billy was bullied to death by his classmates who didn't know if he was gay but only 'thought' that he was gay. Billy was driven to suicide by the constant bullying. Nothing good ever came out of that high school because not only the students but the entire faculty suffered the same disease a disease that affects the entire soul. May you R. I. P. Billy. I don't know if anyone has gone to the site of the original news story on WTHR's website (and it's W T H R dot com - search for 'Lucas Greensburg'). I did, and I didn't like what I saw. In the story, the principal all but blames the boy for his own bullying. From the story: [High School Principal Phil] Chapple said that no one had been punished for picking on Lucas, and that bullying had not even hit their radar. "Sometimes he created that atmosphere around him," Chapple said. "Kind of like a little tornado because he went around doing things that made dust fly, I guess." How is Chapple still the principal of this school? It seems to be the systematic abuse and bullying was not only ignored, it was approved of! I'm no Dan Savage, and I don't have the reach he does, but everyone that reads this story should write him at pchapple (at) greensburg (dot) k12 (dot) in (dot) us, and tell him exactly how you feel about blaming a student for being bullied!

As a mother, this breaks my heart... Everyday children are bullied for so many reasons; sexual orientation, they are not part of the "in" crowd, socieoeconomic background, looks, ect... It's time that the school system took this more seriously and had the same law against bullying as it has against sexual harrassment, drugs/guns on school property, ect! This baby boy will never get a second chance. God bless him... My heart breaks for you.

How many children will die before schools stop thinking about their own liability and stop making excuses? The resources are available. The leadership is lacking. A 14 y.o. boy in my area committed suicide because of homophobic bullying 2 months. Teachers, administrators, parents must take the lead to provide examples for young people to follow. We are their models. I facilitate a support group for lgbtqia kids 14 - 24. These kids are the courageous ones who come out, at least to themselves and each other. And they have such hard lives. Their parents disown them, they get bullied in school, they're victims of rape, incest, violence . . . and they don't know anything else. It's so sad. Why did the school and news media shy away from the words gay and lesbian as if they're dirty words? I'm gay and I'm fighting mad. I'm 48 and so little has changed since I was bullied in school. WTF? Blood is on the hands of our President, school boards, parents, all adults who do nothing.

I wish I knew Billy. I wish I could have told him how I made my way out of Greensburg Community High School. Reading all this brings back painful memories of the similar harassment I endured while at GCHS and how even 13 years ago school staff and administrators played the "I was unaware" card. I will never forget the first time I was shoved into an empty locker bay and harassed within sight and sound of a teacher. I didn't even know what the word meant. I had to go home and ask my parent. I'm sorry Billy. They ignored me also.

Laura Hopkiins, I'm not judging parents without the background I know of from PFLAG membership. The Churches who believe that GLBT are abominations have members who believe this and they are parents of Gay children and they make their childrens life one of hell. One other commentor on here mentioned his parents knew he was going through a bad time in H.S. and stopped him before he could do something drastic about his problems of being bullied. No child takes his own life if he has support from his family, they live with each other and should be relating to each other, not just passing each other by going their own ways. You noticed a problem and you did something about it, good for your family, not all react as you did.
