Editorial Board: Don't Change Iowa Constitution

The Dubuque Telegraph Herald has urged Iowans to vote no on whether to convene a new constitutional convention, which could facilitate an amendment rescinding marriage equality in the state.

"Were voters to approve a convention, gay marriage opponents figure, they might push through an amendment restricting marriage to one man and one woman and put it before voters," editorial staff wrote in a Sunday opinion piece. "It would be one thing if that were the only issue. But a 'yes' vote, which would throw open Iowa's entire constitution, is a perilous prospect."

Regardless of one's opinion on gay marriage in the state, the paper continued, constitutional conventions risk attracting "political donnybrooks."

"Once a convention opens, anything in the constitution could be put up for amendment or elimination. That might not be in Iowans' best interests," the editorial board wrote.
