Gaga Talks About Target Partnership

Lady Gaga says her deal with Target requires the chain of stores to start working with LGBT charity groups and make amends for past mistakes, reports Billboard magazine.

Many of the singer's fans were alarmed when it was announced that Target will release an exclusive edition of Gaga's forthcoming album, Born This Way, with remixes and three additional studio cuts, in May. In an exclusive interview with the music publication, Gaga reveals she wasn't comfortable with the Target partnership when it first came up as a possibility and that she met with "the entire executive staff" at the company.

"That discussion was one of the most intense conversations I've ever had in a business meeting," Gaga says. "Part of my deal with Target is that they have to start affiliating themselves with LGBT charity groups and begin to reform and make amends for the mistakes they've made in the past ... our relationship is hinged upon their reform in the company to support the gay community and to redeem the mistakes they've made supporting those [antigay] groups."

Gaga's latest single, "Born This Way,"became Billboard's 1,000th number 1 single and the first chart topper to use the word "transgendered" in its 50-year history.

Target came under fire by LGBT activists last year for donating corporate funds to support MN Forward, a political action committee that supported antigay candidate Tom Emmer in his failed 2010 run for governor of Minnesota.

I will never shop Target (i'm there 1 or 2 times/wk) if they submit to her weirdo demands. She can't force her immoral views on corporations At the least, i hope they stay neutra.

Lady Gag should stick to singing. A signifigant group will boycott Target for agreeing to her demands. Target should remain neutral in the culture wars.

I think I'll use Lady Gaga's album as an olive branch of sorts. I haven't shopped at Target since last summer's flap, but I'll give them a chance to win back some of my business. I wasn't planning on buying the album, but it seems like a good symbol. Like most of life's complex issues, this is not a simple black and white decision. I won't forget who they supported politically, but I can't ignore the fact that they have some excellent policies and benefits for their LGBT employees. So, my personal boycott will turn into a one-day buy-cott in May. I'll get Gaga's album as well as other items I've been purchasing elsewhere since I stopped shopping at Target last year. I'll then email Target about my purchase. I contacted them last year and was underwhelmed by their cookie cutter response and subsequent lack of action. Here's hoping they really do want to repair a relationship that's damaged, both with me and our community. Outloudfll

Thanks for her activism, but Lady Gaga also needs to pay attention to Target's historic decision to allow its pharmacists to decline to fill prescriptions for the morning after pill. The pharmacists are allowed to decline based on the fact that it is against the religious beliefs of the pharmacist! Where will this lead to. What's the next prescription they might decline to fill? Although LGBT rights are crucial, women's rights are even more universal. I have a "show me" attitude about Target. They blow a lot of smoke and say they are reforming, but let's watch ALL of their actions, not just their political contributions.

It's counterintuitive, but I think this boycott is for Target too, as well as for us. As I posted earlier, we're doing Target no favors if we let them wallow in the unprofitable depravity of hate, bigotry, and discrimination. Most people today are supportive of LGBT rights. Target can attract a lot more people by appealing to the fair-minded majority than to a handful of intolerant neanderthals.

Thank you Lady! For all the straight people that keep saying it's an LGBT community problem , I don't know what to do!...that's how it's done.

Obviously none of you hot heads have worked at Target or know anyone that does, because you would know that although they did commit this major gaffe, they are very supportive of the LGBT community. Especially with employees. I should know, I use to be one. Every year during Pride month, they would post info about the contributions of the LGBT community to society and upcoming local pride events, including ones they sponsored. And they offer Domestic Partnership benefits, etc. So think long and hard before you boycott, because you may be boycotting a gay friend right out of a job. And besides, who REALLY wants to shop at Wal-Mart, because that's really the only other place to get certain goods that can also be found at Target in some areas.

I think that Lady Gaga is right on by demanding Target truly walk their talk. Target said that they would reform their giving after the first incident, however, they continued. I for one, do not shop at Target until they can prove to me and the American people that they will not use their corporate money to support political candidates that do not support the rights of the LGBT community. I will be watching...
