Ron Paul Supports DOMA

RON PAUL X390 (GETTY) | ADVOCATE.COM

Texas congressman and potential presidential aspirant Ron Paul told a religious conservative group in Iowa Monday that he supports the federal Defense of Marriage Act as a matter of states’ rights, but he seemed confused when asked about the court decision that brought marriage equality to that state.

Speaking to the group Family Leader in Pella, Paul said of DOMA, “I see that as an act that was prohibiting the move to nationalize [same-sex marriage] and force Iowa to accept the rules of Massachusetts or whatever,” The Des Moines Registerreports. DOMA, which President Obama and the Justice Department said they will no longer defend in court, allows states to deny recognition to same-sex marriages performed in other states, and also prevents federal recognition of such unions.

Paul, a 75-year-old libertarian-leaning Republican, was asked if he agreed with the 2009 Iowa supreme court ruling for marriage equality, then responded that he hadn’t read that “report” but supported each state’s right to legislate on marriage. An aide intervened, and Paul said marriage is “a personal, spiritual matter,” that people shouldn’t need a license to get married, and that it becomes a state concern only when one state tries to impose its views on another.

Despite his confusion about the ruling, Paul said he supported Iowa voters’ right to recall state supreme court justices. Three of the justices who ruled for marriage equally were ousted in last year’s election; the ruling was unanimous, but only three of the seven justices were up for retention votes. Conservative activist Bob Vander Plaats, who founded Family Leader, was a key player in the recall effort.

Paul, who ran in the GOP presidential primaries in 2008, said at the Family Leader meeting that there’s a 50-50 chance he’ll seek the nomination in 2012.

ron paul is a true conservative... this is proven by his voting record... he is against foriegn entanglements, which cost buttloads of money, he's agains secret programs, which again, cost probably as much as wars... he's against a private banking cartel having control of our money supply, and lending our own money to us with interest that we have to pay back to them in the form of an unconstitutional, direct, unapportioned federal income tax, and probably even as important, he's against legislation, which uses mind control to create the illusion of "social justice", which are merely attempts to enslave us and keep us in the dark...

This is not news to most Libertarians. Search for "a-paul-ed" in the box at the top left of this page to find the article from 2008 which says on the second page: “The LP offers an uncompromising stance on equal rights regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity -- with sexual rights in the Libertarian platform for more than three decades,” says Rob Power, who chairs Outright Libertarians, a gay group within the party, and supports Phillies's candidacy. “Paul’s ideology is socially conservative/traditionalist/federalist. It’s not really Libertarian because it still supports government control over individual lives -- merely at the state, not federal, level. Paul is likable and principled, but his principles are biblical, not Libertarian or even Constitutionalist, because he ignores the 14th Amendment’s equal protection clause.”

jason- Hate crime legislation is moronic! You shouldnt punish someone further just because they hate the person they are committing a crime against. Prison sentences in the the US are already large enough without giving someone more time for the way they think! Why are you vengeful? Paul is for freedom. What dont you get about that?! Why dont you understand that its wrong to punish someone for the way they think? THAT IS ESSENTIALLY WHAT HATE CRIME LEGISLATION IS! Why do you support wars? Why do you support a police state? Why do you support high taxes? Why do you support forcing your will on others? That is essentially what you are doing if you vote for anyother politician besides RON PAUL. Ron Paul isnt perfect but he is for damn sure the closest thing to it that your going to get out of any politician today! Im done talking to you because you are a broken record who cant come to reason that your views on the whole system of government to day are bogus.

@ RonPaulRevolution2012: Here is some facts (or truth) about Ron Paul. Ron Paul is opposed to Employment Non-Discrimination Bill that is inclusive of gays, lesbians and transgender. Ron Paul opposes a transgender-inclusive hate crimes bill. As a matter of fact, he opposes any hate crimes legislation. Ron Paul voted to support a ban of gay adoptions in Washington, DC in 1999. So is Ron Paul gay friendly or not?

Patrick- Actually this title of this article is misleading! Ron Paul never said he supported DOMA! INFACT he said he supported states rights to choose how they want to live. AND one of his main views is getting government completely out of marriage! Ron Paul doesnt hate gays as much as you want to portray his as that. He is not the Republican party. Get a clue! Do your own research on ron paul and stop assuming just because he is republican that he stands for everything you fear!

I think that this argument over who is a real "libertarian" and real "conservative" is not constructive and distracts from the point that Ron Paul apparently supports the federal Defense of Marriage Act. Regardless of who he is facing or what platform he's running on, that's a point against him in my book. And to people like Blonduxo, it doesn't matter whether or not he has a gay friend. John McCain had a gay chief of staff named Mark Buse. Clearly, this relationship was irrelevant to whether or not John McCain was a bad guy for gay rights. At the end of the day, the legislation that a candidate chooses to support and/or push for is what matters. Ron Paul supports the federal Defense of Marriage Act.
