A lesbian couple dodged bullets to save as many as 40 people who became the target of the shooter in Norway, who is being detained for killing at least than 76 people on Friday.

Hege Dalen and her partner, Toril Hansen, were having dinner at a campsite opposite Utöyan Island when they heard screaming and gunshots coming from the island. The couple hopped in their boat and drove across the water, picking up groups of fleeing young people, according to Finnish news site HS.fi.

Because they could not help all of the people at once, the couple made four trips and were able to rescue an estimated 40 people as bullets hit the side of their boat.

"We did not sleep last night at all," Dalen said in a translated version of the article.

Anders Behring Breivik's shooting attack on Utöyan, killing 68, followed a bombing in Oslo that resulted in the death of eight people, CNN reports. Breivik is being identified as a right-wing extremist who objects to the increasing presence of Islamic culture in Europe.

Family values, anyone? These women put them into action. They were brave, brave, brave. Thank goodness for them, and, it sounds like, others like them who also pulled children from the water. I only saw this story because I've continued to google for international press, I haven't seen it in the regular media. I have no doubt that their sexual preference was a factor in the lack of press for them, but I also think that the press in these situations is unduly fixated on the killer. It'd be so much better to deny the killer a platform for his venom, and focus more on the heroic actions of people like these.

It is a very sad and disturbing world when people criticize a truly good deed because of the lifestyles of those that help. These women are brave. Give them their proper credit. How many of you would have done the same thing in the face of danger?

I especially appreciate the fact that two doubts are challenged at once: Competence, fortitude and bravery in combat situations amoung gays and women.

To leave out that they're a lesbian couple would be like not mentioning they're Norwegian. This is a NEWS story, and people want to know the NEWS; what happened, who was there, why they were there....you know, the facts?

It is important for others across the internet who don't live in major metropolis areas to know gay couples play a part in the community as a whole and it is positive for this story to be spread on the internet. The American conservative media compares gay marriage to beastiality and in some sense we are 'sub-human' in the minds of many Americans. Moreover, seeing as it is an article coming from The Advocate it is nice for us as gays to recognize the triumphs from our community. However, I do understand your thinking... a comparison would be that it would be absurd if it were "black couple saves people" but only because it is taboo (and incorrect) nowadays to assume African Americans are lesser citizens. The gay community now is in the midst of what African Americans had to once go through... we have to prove to stupid simple-minded ilk that we are normal people too.

I don't care if they are called lesbian heroes, Norwegian heroes, women heroes, or even viking heroes. As long as you make sure to include the word heroes in there it's fine by me. I myself prefer to call them "Heroes both glorious and fabulous" but that's just me.

Larry, being gay is part of their story, whether they were heroic or not. How do you say "and her partner" without implying that they are in fact a committed couple, and yes that's gay? Whenever your reference a man's wife, you have said the same thing, only straight, of course, and expected. To obfuscate and say "a friend" or "two women" would be misleading and leaving out important information about the heroes. And, uh, this is the Advocate. A gay person doing something wonderful and heroic IS heroic noteworthy, because other news outlets may not carry this story and the news might be lost to those who need to know.

Unarmed, they steered toward the gunshots and robbed the homicidal fascist of dozens of victims. I am proud to call them HEROES and if the corporate-owned media shuns them, then we must tell their tale.

@Larry from Boston: It does not make them more heroic, but what it does do is show those in our own country who would label us as anything less than equal that we are very capable of and likely to be productive members of society, deserving the same rights that they already possess.
