In Defense of Charles Djou

COMMENTARY: GOProud's Jimmy LaSalvia says the labeling of newly elected Hawaii congressman Charles Djou as antigay is unfounded and just anther example of liberal bloggers attacking Republican politicians.

As the election results from Hawaii’s special election became final, I was thrilled to see that voters had selected pro-gay Republican Charles Djou to represent them in Congress. I know Congressman Djou, and I know his leadership is needed on Capitol Hill. Chris Barron, GOProud’s board chairman, and I had the opportunity to meet with Congressman Djou in March. It was quickly clear to both of us that Djou’s support for commonsense conservative proposals to improve the lives of all Americans, but particularly gay and lesbian Americans, would make him a the type of candidate our organization could support. As a result of that meeting and his answers to our candidate survey, GOProud enthusiastically endorsed his candidacy.

Imagine my surprise the day after the election when I clicked on Advocate.com to see the headline “Hawaii Elects Antigay Congressman.” Were they serious? Were they talking about the same man I know?

Unfortunately, there are far too many politicians who deserve the label “antigay,” and far too many of them claim residence within the Republican Party. Indeed, some politicians in this country make a living demonizing gay people and our families.

Those who poison the political process by demonizing gay people do a serious disservice to those they represent and to the institutions they have been elected to serve in.

However, attaching the label “antigay” to every single politician or person who is not 100% aligned with the political agenda of the gay left is not only unfair but wildly counterproductive.

Like President Obama, Djou is not there yet on the question of marriage equality. His positions, however, on both traditional “gay rights” issues (as defined by the gay left) and issues of importance to gay conservatives certainly make it clear that he is not deserving of the tag “antigay.”

Even by the gay left’s own measuring stick, Congressman Djou can’t be labeled antigay. Charles Djou supports the repeal of "don't ask, don't tell" to allow gay service members to serve openly; indeed, the freshly minted congressman cast one of his first votes for the "don't ask, don't tell" compromise legislation that will begin the process of reversing this discriminatory policy. Congressman Djou also supports providing domestic-partner benefits to federal employees, supports domestic-partner tax equity, supports the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, and opposes efforts to amend the U.S. Constitution with a discriminatory anti-gay-marriage provision.

Right on! Just because Djou is for repealing DADT does not make him pro-gay or for justice. It just means he doesn't mind putting our GLBT community in harms way! He dances lock step with the Republicans who will never understand justice or freedom. I know pro-gay elected Republicans: Representatives Cynthia Thielen and Barbara Maramoto. Cynthia has voted every year since 1996 for marriage equality in the face of ridicule. She's a a real supporter. Barbara has voted for the past two years for justice and she too is worthy of mention.

He's not anti-gay? Wake up and smell the Hawaiian coffee. Even your summary of his pro-gay positions indicated that he was not in favor of any sort of equality for gays but would allow for equal tax parity and equal rights for Federal employees. How is this not anti-gay? I have the same question for Gov. Lingle who is concerned about providing all the rights of marriage enjoyed by hetero-sexuals to gays. Just which rights which accrue to married couples are gays not entitled to under our US Constitution by virtue of the fact that they were born gay? Hospital visitation? Inheritance? The Family Leave act? Lingle can;t even say she opposes gay civil unions on religious grounds since her religion (Reform Judaism) supports gay marriage. Rather it's the GOP that is anti-gay and insists upon such of its elected candidates.

I live in Honolulu and Charles Djou is NO friend to the gay community. Gay republicans will always defend their candidates no matter how much they suck. Republicans are republicans. GOProud will be as supportive for Gov. Lingle when she vetoes the Civil Union bill HB444. They stand by their bigots. The governor by the way, will veto the bill because it is too close to equal. And republicans do not like too close to equal. They are republicans. Even our gay friends who are republicans will spin their bigotry to try to feel better about voting for republicans. Republicans dont even like Civil Unions! Duh! They are bigots! GOProud can try to worm their way out of supporting John McCain, Sarah Palin and now Charles Djou but they have blood on thier hands and they know it.

Reading this article only proves that the man supports policies that would harm the average GLBT person rather than help him or her. He has a very strong conservative slant that recommends government programs that would help big business more than theh average person. I couldn't believe that this author threw in the bit about private retirement accounts to wipe out Social Security. Yeah, while they are at it, why don't we just get rid of all the social safety nets and put it in the hands of churches and charities. I really hope that none of these conservative policies ever become reality. We are a forward thinking society, and I think these conservative ideas would put us back into the dark ages of torture and debtors prisons. Further, I think that the estate tax is a good thing. People should not be able to pass on vast amounts of wealth to perpetuate their dominance over the lower classes.

Charles Djou appeals to fairly conservative and religious voters here in Hawaii. He talks a lot about not increasing taxes and prefers "smaller government," which are fairly typical conservative positions. He is quite clearly against the Hawaii Civil Unions bill HB444 and that is in his campaign literature. Charles Djou spoke at the 2009 Honolulu Tax Day Tea Party and had a table at the 2010 Honolulu Tax Day Tea Party. Djou was endorsed by tea party PAC Liberty First Political Action Committee. He got $2000 from the Liberty First PAC in Honolulu. I don't expect LGBT people to get much support from the tea baggers. The Democratic Party candidate who is expected to face Djou in the General Election in November is Hawaii Senate President Colleen Hanabusa. From a LGBT perspective, she is far from perfect, but she will be a lot better at representing us than Charles Djou.

The repeal of the inheritance tax is one that we all should approve of The very rich already have tax lawyers that can get themselves out of paying, eg the Kennedy's It is the business owner or small farmer who gets hit the hardest Besides, how is it fair for someone to pay taxes their entire life then have to pay up to 55% (what the tax rate will return to unless Congress acts before the end of the year)of their estate to the government just because they died?

Sorry, but if you are against equal rights for gays, then you deserve the term "anti-gay." That includes marriage. It's time we stop giving politician's a 'pass' when it comes to marriage equality. You either believe that the constitution requires that all people be treated with the same dignity and respect, or you don't. This includes democratic and republican politicians. If you want to deny gays and lesbians equal rights under the law, you are anti-gay.
