Police in Belarus used force to break up a gay pride event that was banned by authorities, arresting several participants and beating some to the ground.
Riot police broke up the event Saturday morning in the capital city of Minsk. Organizers said their goal was to attract public attention to the violation of sexual minorities' rights in Belarus.
Sergei Androsenko, a gay rights activist and one of the pride event’s organizers, said the treatment of gays and lesbians in Belarus amounts “to the state sanctioning homophobia.”
