2016 Bingham Cup
Lucky Nashville. Music City got to host the recently-wrapped 2016 Bingham Cup, the world championship of gay rugby and one of the biggest rugby tournaments in the world. The Melbourne Chargers were victorious, defeating the San Francisco Fog, the Washington D.C. Renegades, and the Sydney Convicts to win their first ever Bingham Cup. Over 1,300 players and hundreds of spectators, coaches, and supporters participated in the week-long celebration. Nashville dignitaries, including Mayor Megan Barry, were on hand to bless the event.
"The Mark Kendall Bingham Memorial Tournament is named after Mark Bingham, a gay rugby player who died on United Flight 93 on September 11, 2001," according to Bingham Cup officials. "Mark played for UC Berkeley and the San Francisco Fog RFC and was one of the founding members of International Gay Rugby, a registered nonprofit dedicated to promoting equality and diversity in the sport. He was also involved in the founding of the Gotham Knights RFC, the gay and inclusive team in New York City, at the time of his death."
