The bodies of athletes are not just beautiful in the way that fitness models are, in that they have perfectly formed and exercised bodies. Athletes have bodies that are essentially efficient human machines. They have been trained since youth for specific tasks, feats of strength, and endurance. The body of an ideal soccer player is different from that of a champion swimmer or a gymnast.
Photographer Ewoud Broeksma, like Eadweard Muybridge, has devoted much of his career to examining them, recording them, and celebrating the poetry of an athlete in motion. Because of his dedication and the quality of his work, sports personalities from all over the world have posed for Broeksma.
The photographer's book Doubles, from which there are some photos in this gallery, and the follow-up book, Doubles II, are both available at Galerie Mooi Man online. You can see a large archive of his work on his site. You can also find Ewoud on Facebook.
