With a dozen Emmy nominations, Ellen DeGeneres and her new afternoon talkfest, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, made a smashing showing when the 31st Daytime Emmy Award nominations were announced on Thursday. The pioneering out comic beat out even powerhouse Dr. Phil to become the year's most nominated talk show. As reported in Daily Variety, CBS soap The Young and the Restless garnered the most nominations (16) of any daytime program. But ABC's All My Children, featuring Eden Riegel as Erika Kane's lesbian daughter, Bianca, came in second with 14 nominations. Competing with Dr. Phil and DeGeneres in the race for best talk-show host are Wayne Brady, Regis Philbin and Kelly Ripa, and the cohosts of The View. Each of those shows was nominated as well. Salma Hayek, dear to lesbian audiences for her portrayal of Mexican painter Frida Kahlo, copped two nominations, as executive producer and director, for her first TV feature, The Maldonado Miracle. The Daytime Emmy Awards will be broadcast live on NBC on May 21 from New York's Radio City Music Hall.
