French writer and activist Jean Genet wrote numerous novels, plays, and poems but only made one film. The 25-minute Un Chant d'amour (1950) was released by Cult Epics in February, reports TheStranger.com.

The silent semipornographic film portrays a young hustler in prison who has a cell neighbor that lusts after him. Other prisoners masturbate and dance while a guard spies on them through peepholes. The film showcases dreamlike fantasies among the various prisoners.

Genet's provocative portrayal of gay people and criminals caused the United States to ban his work in the 1950s.

The DVD is available from Cult Epics for $29.95. (The Advocate)
