Theater and film actor Alan Cumming received an Order of the British Empire, one of the United Kingdom's highest honors, at Buckingham Palace Tuesday for his work as an entertainer and LGBT rights activist.
Cumming received the award from the Princess Royal, according to STV News, for his "services to film, theatre and the arts and for his work as a gay rights campaigner."
Also honored on Tuesday were Vogue editor Anna Wintour and actor Pierce Brosnan.
Cumming's work includes the roles of Nightcrawler in X2, Billie Blaikie in The L Word, and Sandy Frink in the cult classic Romy and Michele's High School Reunion. The actor, who identifies as bisexual, has been a staunch advocate of gay and lesbian causes in the United States and Europe.
