G&L Critics Group Announces Award Nominations


The awards honor films and TV shows of both general and LGBT-specific interest and include categories for the year's campiest entertainment.

The Gay and Lesbian Entertainment Critics Association has announced the nominees for its Dorian Awards, which honor films and TV shows of both general and LGBT-specific interest.

For Film of the Year, the group nominated Argo, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Keep the Lights On, Les Miserables, Lincoln, and Moonrise Kingdom. Keep the Lights On also received a nomination for LGBT Film of the Year, along with Any Day Now, Cloud Atlas, Gayby, and The Perks of Being a Wallflower.

LGBT TV Show of the Year nominees are American Horror Story, Happy Endings, Modern Family, The New Normal, and Smash.

The group also has categories for Campy Flick of the Year and Campy TV Show of the Year. In the former, nominees are 2016: Obama's America, Cloud Atlas, Magic Mike, The Paperboy, Pitch Perfect, and Rock of Ages. The latter competition includes 666 Park Avenue, American Horror Story: Asylum, GCB, Here Comes Honey Boo Boo, Liz & Dick, and Smash.

LGBT contenders in various categories, most of which have five nominees, include Alan Cumming for Film Performance of the Year -- Actor for Any Day Now; Modern Family's Jesse Tyler Ferguson and The Big Bang Theory's Jim Parsons for TV Performance of the Year -- Actor; Andrew Rannells of The New Normal for the We're Wilde About You newcomer award; and Tony Kushner, Ryan Murphy, and Tig Notaro for Wilde Artist of the Year, presented to an artist who is "a truly groundbreaking force in the fields of film, theater, and/or television," according to the critics' group.

The Timeless Award, a noncompetitive honor, will go to gay actor and political activist Sir Ian McKellen. The award recognizes a performer who has had an "exemplary career" that "has been marked by character, wisdom, and wit."

The winners will be announced January 16. These awards will be presented February 10 at the Royal Opera House in London, with gay actor Stephen Fry hosting.
