Uganda's goal of placing 60,000 HIV patients on antiretroviral treatment by the end of 2005 has been surpassed some six months ahead of schedule, with 65,000 people currently receiving the life-prolonging drugs, according to Jesse Kagimba, the Ugandan president's adviser on AIDS. The free drugs are being provided by the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria; the World Health Organization; the U.S. government; and other donors. Of the 1.1 million Ugandans infected with HIV, some 200,000 are in need of antiretroviral treatment, according to the Uganda AIDS Commission. (AP)
