Binge-worthy web series Self-Obsessed is a decidedly queer show ready to go mainstream.
The struggle to find your passion -- both career-wise and sex-wise -- is at the heart of a new gay-centric web series ready to move past cult following and into viral viewing status.
Written and created by out artist, author, actor, and sometime comic book editor Sina Grace, Self-Obsessed balances the absurdity of modern gay dating with the harsh reality of turning your passion into a career.
The five-episode second season -- recently uploaded on YouTube -- focuses on Grace's attempt to live in the moment, survive the travails and indignities of tabling at a comic book convention, and finding both a relationship and a the comic book project that excites him. As the "the voice of all gay people," as he proclaims himself in the first episode, Grace struggles with relatable emotional and financial dilemmas. Don't expect a sanitized view of single gay life -- "Can he feel my asshole gaping for him?" is spoken by one of the Self-Obsessed characters.
Grace cut his teeth as editorial director for Skybound Comics, Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman's comic imprint at Image Comics. Grace's second Image Comics graphic novel, Nothing Lasts Forever, comes out next month, along the first issue he wrote of Marvel Comics' all-new, all-gay Iceman series.
Self-Obsessed is definitely a more personal affair, based on one of his graphic novels and centered on his own efforts to make a living off his creative pursuits while maintaining a vibrant sex life. The show's stellar cast includes Buffy the Vampire Slayer alums Amber Benson and Adam Busch, comedy vets Laura Silverman, Drew Droege, and Jon Gabrus, and oodles of great music
