Texas state representative Norma Chavez (pictured) is trying to beat her opponent Naomi Gonzalez by saying Gonzalez is a lesbian and needs to come out.
Chavez represents District 76, which includes part of El Paso County. Other Democrats aren't fond of her tactics, saying her tactics hurt and divide the party.
"If somebody is lesbian or gay, our arms are open to all these individuals," El Paso County party chairman Danny Anchondo told the El Paso Times. "All these people are part of the party, so I don't understand why someone would be using those terms to attack somebody."
Chavez said she thinks it's a valid issue, saying Gonzalez's sexuality might affect policy decisions in the state legislature about same-sex marriage. She also said she made the comments after Gonzalez attacked her for being a motorcycle enthusiast.
"I have accepted my biker community," Chavez said. "She needs to accept her gay community."
